SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer earned its first Centennial Conference win of the season on Saturday night with a 1-0 shutout against the Muhlenberg College Mules. Swarthmore improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action while the Mules slipped to 3-2-2 (0-1-1 Centennial).
The Garnet netted the game's only goal in the 51st minute. Swarthmore took a corner from the left side and Michael Gross served a ball into the right side of the box. Junior Trevor Homstad got a head on the pass and tapped it forward, finding the foot of freshman Ben Lau for the finish on the near side. The goal was the first of Lau's young collegiate career.
Freshman goalkeeper Ian Withy-Berry recorded his first collegiate shutout and made two saves in the process. Both of Withy-Berry's saves came in the final 12 minutes of play to help secure the clean sheet.
Swarthmore took seven shots in total with Lau recording two, Yuheng Wang two and Woojin Shin three.
Swarthmore is back at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Ursinus College in another Centennial Conference showdown.
