Baseball Blanks Gwynedd-Mercy in Split

Bullets earn twinbill split with 7-0 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and senior Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) combined for a five-hit shutout in game two to help Gettysburg College pick up a split in a non-conference doubleheader with Gwynedd-Mercy University Sunday at Kirchhoff Field.

Gettysburg (8-7) dropped the opening game 12-4 as Gwynedd-Mercy (5-8) pounded 19 hits, but Burbank and Wortmann quieted the Griffin bats in a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

Burbank was dealing in the opening innings of game two, setting the side down in the first and fourth innings and stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the second frame. The Bullets spotted their starter a lead in the first inning as junior Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) laced a double to center field and came around to score on a single by junior Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey). After stealing second base, LaCoe scored on a single to left-center by sophomore Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill.

With the score 4-0 heading into the fifth, the Griffins loaded the bases with one out. Freshman catcher Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) tracked down a foul pop behind the plate and Giovinco scooped up a grounder and touched second for the final two outs to close the threat.

Freshman Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) drove home a run with a double to left field in the fifth inning and picked up an RBI single in the seventh to close the scoring.

Wortmann entered the game in the top of the seventh and worked out of trouble in each of the final two frames. After allowing a pair of lead-off singles in the eighth, the senior struck out two of the next three batters and picked up a fly out to right field. The Griffins loaded the bases in the top of the ninth before Wortmann recorded another strikeout and a pop out to second base to end the game.

Burbank finished with two hits, three walks, and three strikeouts over six innings and moved to 2-2 on the season. Wortmann picked up a save after working three scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Sophomore Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished 3-for-5 with one RBI. Quimby reached base three times with two hits and a walk and scored a pair of runs, while Seibert finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Decker also posted a pair of hits.

The opening game was a hit parade as the two teams combined for 30 base knocks. Gwynedd-Mercy took a 2-0 lead before Gettysburg brought across three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Giovinco plated the first run on a single to center field and Quimby dropped in a pinch-hit bloop single to left to plate two more.

The Griffins regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning on a double to left field by Dave Tatoian. The visitors continued to pull away by scoring in five of the final six innings of the game, including three in the top of the ninth.

Szczesny posted two hits and scored two runs in the opening game. LaCoe, Giovinco, and freshman Matthew Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) all went 2-for-4.

Gino Tripodi earned the win for Gwynedd-Mercy after allowing two earned runs and striking out five over seven innings. Lead-off hitter Jason Mulvey went 3-for-5 with three runs and Tatoian drove in three runs on two hits.
