Williams Holds Off Hopkins Rally to Defeat the Blue Jays, 9-8

JHU Falls to 12-5 on the Season

The Basics

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team trailed 7-1 but rallied to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the ninth, however, Williams held on to take a 9-8 victory over Hopkins on Friday morning in Fort Myers, FL.

How it Happened
• The Ephs scored three runs in the top of the first thanks to a bases-clearing triple by Doug Schaffer, however, Hopkins cut the lead to two with a run in the bottom of the inning as Mike Eberle came around to score after the ball got past the Williams left fielder on a Nate Davis single.
• Williams put up three more runs in the second as Eric Pappas was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Schaffer plated two more runs with a single to center to make it a 6-1 game.
• The Blue Jays loaded the bases with no outs in the third but Williams starting pitcher, John Lamont, was able to retire the next three JHU batters to get out of the inning.
• An Eric Mini single to right-center plated another run for Williams in the fourth to give the Ephs a six-run advantage in the game, but JHU responded in the bottom of the inning as Bradley Parsons tripled to deep center with two outs and came around to score on a single from AJ King to make the score 7-2.
• The Ephs went back up by six in the top of the sixth as a David Kwan ground out plated the eighth Williams run of the day.
• Johns Hopkins began its comeback in the seventh scoring two runs on a Matthew Ritchie single to center to make the score 8-4 but Williams responded in the eighth on an RBI single from Minie to make the score 9-4.
• The Blue Jays had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and King scored the fifth JHU run on a double play ball. Hopkins loaded the bases once again thanks to walks to Davis and Frank Clara and Adam Kohl then followed with a two-run double to make it a 9-7 game.    
• Hopkins had first and second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Eberle brought home run number eight for Hopkins with a double to left to make it a one-run game, however, Kyle Dean got the final out as the Ephs held on for the 9-8 win.
