Women's Tennis Suffers First Loss to No. 5 Wesleyan, 9-0

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The Haverford College women's tennis team (4-1) challenged itself against defending national runner-up and No. 5 Wesleyan on Thursday morning at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, falling by a 9-0 final to the NESCAC foe Cardinals for their first loss of the season. Fresh off their second appearance in the NCAA title match in program history, Wesleyan improved to 4-0 to begin its young season. 

Haverford's number one doubles pairing of Rachael Fitzgerald and Anne Tobin grabbed two games from the nation's fourth-ranked doubles pairing of Sasha Gaeth and Kristina Yu. Abbey Russano and Ellie Esterowitz also won a game from the third Wesleyan pairing of Venia Yeung and Katie Fleischman. 

At number one singles, Fitzgerald looked poised in her first set, grabbing three games against the nation's No. 20 ranked singles player in Caitlyn Ferrante. At number two singles Russano grabbed two games in each set from national No. 27 Katie Fleischman. Summer Williams also collected a team-best five games at number six singles against Caitlin Goldberg. 

Haverford will now return to action on Friday, wrapping up the spring trip with a contest against No. 11 Carnegie Mellon. The action is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. in Kissimmee, Florida.
