Softball Plays Tough in Season Finale

The Muhlenberg softball team closed out the 2018 season with two hard-fought games against Washington College, falling 3-2 and 7-4.

The Mules (12-26, 4-12 CC) battled from behind to tie the score in both games before the Shorewomen (16-20, 8-8 CC) answered with runs in the later innings to come away with two wins. With those victories, Washington qualified for the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs by moving into the fourth and final spot.

Senior Hanna Caiola led the Mules with three hits, finishing her career one shy of 100. Junior Kristy Selby collected a hit in each game of the doubleheader.

Seniors Hayley Peterson and Haley Fedak each pitched a complete game in their final outings of their careers. Fedak fanned two batters to reach 251 strikeouts for her career, becoming the seventh Muhlenberg pitcher to reach 250 in a career.

Washington started the day scoring its first two runs in the third inning. Freshman Ariana Feliziani scored Muhlenberg's first run in the bottom half of the frame and drove in the tying run on a double in the fourth.

Peterson pitched her way out of a jam in the fifth inning, but the Shorewomen struck for the go-ahead run in the sixth. Muhlenberg put runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth but could not score and then was retired in order in the seventh.

The teams combined for more runs in the first inning of the late game than the total in the earlier contest. Muhlenberg scored four of those runs, with Selby hitting an RBI single to plate Caiola to start the rally. Fedak then scored on an error before senior Amelia Shelley pushed a single through the right side that scored two more runs, making it 4-3.

The Shorewomen answered with a run in each of the next two innings to take the lead back. Muhlenberg put runners on with a chance to tie in the fifth and sixth innings, but Washington got out of each inning before adding two insurance runs in the seventh.

Junior Kristina Qualben hit her 10th double of the season in the second game, joining senior Karissa Astrella (11) as one of four Muhlenberg duos to each have at least 10 doubles in the same season.

Muhlenberg finished the season with 323 hits, the fifth most in program history, on its way to a .305 team batting average. Selby (pictured above) led the Mules with 47 hits, good for eighth most in a season by a Mule, and a .376 batting average.
