Haverford Topples Women’s Basketball

Bullets fall in first league game of the season

GETTYSBURG, Pa. The 20th-ranked Gettysburg College women's basketball team suffered its first Centennial Conference loss as the Bullets shot a season-low 30.9 percent from the floor in a 59-38 setback to Haverford College inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (15-3, 12-1 CC) stays atop of the Centennial Conference standings, while Haverford (14-4, 10-4 CC) is tied for third with Ursinus College (13-6, 10-4 CC). Johns Hopkins University is second (12-2, 16-3 CC) and Muhlenberg College is fifth (11-6, 7-5 CC).

Junior Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) paced Gettysburg with 11 points. Sophomore Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) added eight points on 4-of-8 shooting and four rebounds, while senior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) contributed six points and five boards. Freshman Seanna McNamara (Berwyn, Pa. The Episcopal Academy) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Three players tallied double-digit scoring for the Fords. Megan Furch led the team with 17, while Macy Goldbach and Anna-Sophia Capizzi chipped in 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The rematch of last season's CC Championship contest was close during the first three minutes of the opening period as the score was tied 4-4. That would be the last tie of the day for the hosts as Haverford went on a 13-2 run to close the period, leading 17-7.

The Bullets pulled within five at the 6:57 marker as the team sparked a 9-4 run to open the second quarter. Haverford then went on to outscore Gettysburg 10-2 during the next three minutes. The Bullets held the visitors scoreless for the last three minutes of play in the second, but struggled to get any offensive flow as freshman Carly Rice (Pennington, N.J./The Pennington School) was the only Bullet to score during that streak, banking a trey with 2:04 left. The Orange and Blue were down 31-21 at the half. Gehrin netted nine of the Bullets 14 points in the second period.

The Fords jumped to a quick 8-0 run to start the third quarter. From there, Haverford controlled the second half as the hosts managed to shoot just 8-of-30 (27 percent) from the floor. After the 8-0 run in the third, the margin would drop no lower than 14 in the final two quarters.

Gettysburg finished 17-of-55 (30.9 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Fords went 23-of-54 from the field, including 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from 3-point range, and 9-of11 (81.8 percent) from the charity stripe. Haverford held the slight 38-33 edge on the glass.
