Wrestling Comeback Falls Short against Oneonta

SUNY Oneonta prevails 28-18

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The comeback fell short for the Gettysburg College wrestling team as SUNY Oneonta won the final two matches to clinch a 28-18 decision over the Bullets inside Bream Gym Thursday night.

Gettysburg (3-2) found itself trailing Oneonta (5-4) 16-0 following two forfeits and a major decision victory by Ahken Chu at 141 pounds. Junior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) wasted little time putting the Bullets on the board in his bout against Eric Brach at 141 pounds, scoring an early takedown and pinning Brach to the mat at 1:47. Devlin improved to 14-3 with his seventh fall of the campaign.

Freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) held off a late comeback by Daniel Murphy to earn a 7-4 win at 157 pounds. Martin jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the beginning of the third period and improved to 15-4 this season.

After Oneonta took a 19-9 lead with a decision at 165, seniors Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) posted back-to-back wins to cut the deficit to one. Kowalski dominated his bout against Jacob Mansman at 174 pounds, leaping out to an 10-2 lead before scoring a pin with 10 seconds left in the second period. The senior improved to 21-2.

Ebert scored a pair of near-falls to seize an 11-2 lead in the first period against Ryan Marszal at 184. Marszal rallied late and prevented the Gettysburg senior from getting a major decision with a 14-8 final, which kept the Red Dragons in front 19-18.

Oneonta earned a decision at 197 before James Bethel pinned senior Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) in a battle of top-10 heavyweights.

Gettysburg heads to Delaware Valley University for a non-conference match on Saturday at 6 p.m.
