The Muhlenberg wrestling team finished in second place at the Scotty Wood Duals, advancing to the final for the second straight year before falling to 19th-ranked Central.
Senior
Jimmy Fratantoni shared Most Outstanding Wrestler honors with a Central competitor, winning both of his bouts at 184.
The Mules (7-1) breezed through their group with shutouts of Camden County College (50-0) and Temple (59-0). The back-to-back shutouts were the first in program history; in fact, it's only the second time Muhlenberg has recorded two shutouts in the same season.
The win against Temple set a school record for biggest shutout in a match in which more than half the bouts were contested. The Mules scored the maximum 60 points against Haverford in 1997-98 on six forfeits and four pins.
Muhlenberg ran into stiffer competition in the semifinal match against Washington & Jefferson and trailed 15-8 through seven bouts. Fratantoni began the comeback with a major decision, and senior
Gennaro Cerminara needed only 75 seconds to pin his opponent and give the Mules an 18-15 lead.
Junior heavyweight
Scott Schaeffer clinched the win with another first-period pin.
Among the Mules' losses against W&J was an impressive showing at 157 by freshman
Angelo Mahaffey, who dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the wrestler ranked 10th in Division III. Mahaffey entered the third period tied 2-2 before allowing an escape.
Central captured the first five bouts of the final and went on to a 36-6 win. Muhlenberg won two bouts, including one by junior
Dylan Schwartz, who scored a takedown with 1:13 remaining for a 3-2 win against the 10th-ranked 165-pounder in Division III, a 2018 NCAA qualifier.
Cerminara's two pins – both in the first period – gave him an even 40 for his career. Freshman 133-pounder
Billy Moore (pictured above) and junior 141-pounder
Austin Sherman both recorded a pair of major decisions.
Sophomore
Alex Helpin recorded the fastest of Muhlenberg's nine pins, recovering from an early takedown to flatten his Temple opponent in just 56 seconds.
