Blue Jays outlast Haverford, win fifth straight game to start season

HAVERFORD, Pa. — While Haverford threatened to end the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's winning streak to begin its season, the Blue Jays were able to hold off the Fords in a non-conference road victory Saturday afternoon, 52-49. Emily Martin and Rachel Forjan both scored 12 points to lead E-town on the day.

Three pointers from Krissy Pennell and Rachel Forjan, along with a made jumper from Alyssa Aichele off a Haverford (4-4) turnover had Elizabethtown (5-0) out in front 8-0 in the early going.

Midway through the first half, the Jays held an eight-point advantage over host Haverford. Nikki Thompson drained a jumper with 9:48 left in the opening half to make it 16-8. After a Fords' bucket, Emily Young responded with a jumper of her own to keep the lead at eight.

A quick 6-0 spurt brought Haverford back within a point with 5:08 to go, and that's the lead Elizabethtown would have going into the break. Erika Ferro's basket with 1:50 on the clock put E-town back in front after surrendering its lead, 23-22.

Haverford outscored E-town in the paint 8-2 in the first 20 minutes, but the Jays would then outperform the Fords in that same area in the second half, 18-10. Martin was a big part of that, recording eight of her ten second-half points right around the rim.

Sierra Berkel scored four straight points to begin the half, returning the lead to Haverford, 26-23. E-town would take back the lead on a Martin layup, 29-28, but the Fords would pull back ahead and up the lead to five.

The Blue Jays battled back to reclaim the advantage, as neither team could pull away from the other. The largest lead of the second half no more than two possessions (five points).

E-town held Haverford to 8-of-27 shooting in the second half, but the Fords made up for the poor shooting by going 11-for-15 at the foul line to keep them in it. EC only had four made free throws in six attempts.

Forjan completed an and-one with 3:33 left to break a 44-44 tie and put E-town into the lead for good. Haverford got as close as a point, but Martin hit two baskets down low and Pennell's foul shot helped E-town come away with its fifth straight win to start the season.

Young and Thompson combined for 10 of the bench's 15 points. Elizabethtown's reserves outscored Haverford's 15-6.

Martin went for 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting along with seven boards. Forjan had 12 points and a team-high five assists.

The women's basketball team will have a week off before playing host to Merchant Marine on Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m.
