Collegeville, Pa. – After a scoreless first-half, senior's
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and
Virginia Sanford (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School) each drilled a goal in the second-half to push the Gettysburg College women's soccer team past Ursinus College for its second consecutive Centennial Conference victory Saturday evening, 2-0.
The Bullets have now defeated the Bears for the third straight season.
Gettysburg has tallied three shutouts so far this season and hold a 5-2-1 overall mark and a 2-1 conference record.
Neither team had many shot opportunities in the first half as they finished the stanza with five each. Gettysburg's leading scorer Miesemer marched down the field for the first shot at the net 47 seconds into the stanza, but it went wide. The next opportunity did not come until 19 minutes later when sophomore
Jules Myers (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) shot also went wide. Within a minute of each other, junior
Charlotte Cenatiempo (Weston, Conn./Weston) had a great look at the net, but the ball hit the post, while freshman
Kelly Gaudian (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) shot went wide with 35:24 and 36:17 on the clock, respectively. Freshman
Paige Merz (Kensington, Md./St.John's College) was the final player to take an attempt, but her shot was blocked, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
At the 55th minute, Miesemer put Gettysburg ahead 1-0 after she collected the ball off a deflected pass, turned, and blasted a 35-yard kick to the top right corner for her fourth goal of the season. Miesemer has either assisted or scored a goal in five of the eight games this season.
The Bullets pushed their lead 2-0 at the 67th minute when Sanford took a cross from junior
Brooke Priddy (Darnestown, Md./Bullis School) just outside the box, then pounded the shot into the lower left side of the net.
For the remainder of the match, the Bullets defense did an excellent job as they only allowed one shot on goal.
Gettysburg outshot Ursinus 11-8, with the Bullets having five of those shots on goal, but tied the Bears in corner kicks with four each.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) played all 90 minutes and notched three saves.
Gettysburg will take a break from conference play as they welcome Frostburg State University to Clark Field on Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m.
