No. 21 River Hawk Football Rolls Past Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 21/24 Susquehanna University football team scored 24 points in the second quarter Saturday afternoon to secure a 31-7 Centennial Conference win over Moravian College. Sophomore quarterback Michael Ruisch (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland) rushed in for two touchdowns as Susquehanna (5-1, 4-1 CC) did all its damage on the ground, spoiling Moravian's (1-5, 1-4 CC) Homecoming.

Today's win marks the River Hawks' fifth consecutive win in Bethlehem. It is also the first time since a 10-point victory over Moravian in 2013 that SU has posted a double-digit win over the Greyhounds.

The River Hawks find themselves in sole possession of second in the Centennial standings following today's triumph and No. 18/20 Johns Hopkins University's 20-17 loss to Franklin & Marshall College. No. 5/6 Muhlenberg College remains undefeated after a 45-21 win over Ursinus College Friday night.

Susquehanna 31, Moravian 7

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • After a three-and-out on Susquehanna's first possession, Christopher Mills hit Eddie Olsen with an 84-yard strike for a 7-0 Moravian lead at 13:37, capping off a one-play, 84-yard drive on the Greyhounds' first possession of the game.
  • The River Hawks punted on their second drive before senior outside linebacker Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) sacked Mills for a loss of nine yards to end Moravian's second possession.
  • Susquehanna marched 60 yards down the field but junior running back Da'Avian Ellington (Carteret, N.J./Woodbridge) fumbled at the one-yard line and the River Hawks remained scoreless.

Second Quarter
  • Sophomore kicker Elijah Hoffman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) finally put the River Hawks on the scoreboard as Hoffman's 29-yard field goal completed a 10-play, 26-yard drive.
  • SU scored its first touchdown on its very next possession as Ruisch ran it in from four yards out, finishing off an eight-yard, 54-yard drive and giving his team a 10-7 lead at 6:19.
  • On the Greyhounds' second possession of the quarter, Roumes was a one-man wrecking crew as he sacked Mills for the second time, forced a fumble, recovered the fumble at the Moravian eight-yard line and took it in for the score, giving Susquehanna a 17-7 advantage at 6:06.
  • The River Hawks' third drive of the quarter ended with Ruisch scoring his second touchdown with his legs from eight yards out.
  • Two punts and a fumble is all Moravian had to show for its play in the second quarter.

Third Quarter
  • Moravian punted to start the second half and the River Hawks turned the ball over on downs on the Moravian 18-yard line on their first possession of the half.
  • The Greyhounds punted once again on their next drive.

Fourth Quarter
  • In its only possession of the fourth quarter, Susquehanna used an 11-play, 49-yard drive to eat up nearly seven minutes of the clock as sophomore running back Xavier Briggs-DeVore (Paterson, N.J./Paramus Catholic) carried the ball nine times for 41 yards, including punching it in from two yards out for the 24-point lead.
