The Basics
  • Score: Stevens (142 points) - 1st Place
  • Location: Providence Career & Tech Center - Providence, Rhode Island
  • Short Story: Led by championships in four weight classes, No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling won the prestigious Ithaca College Invitational Saturday.
  • The results: Stevens finished with 142 team points to finish ahead of 15 other programs, including No. 6 Johnson & Wales University. The Wildcats finished second with 138 points. Ithaca (129), Otterbein (100.5) and Castleton (95.5) rounded out the top-five.
  • The victors: junior Joey Borai moved through the ranks to finish first at 125 pounds as an unseeded wrestler. The individual championship earned the Toms River, New Jersey native the event's Outstanding Wrestler honor. Joining Borai at the top of the winners podium were sophomore Troy Stanich (133 pounds), senior Zach Wilhelm (157 pounds) and junior Thomas Poklikuha (165 pounds). Stanich's victory over JWU's Jay Albis was his fourth-career win over the top-ranked competitor in the weight class and avenged his lone loss to Albis in the last year's national semifinal.

Other Top Finishers
  • At 141 pounds, freshman Brett Kaliner reached the championship match in his collegiate debut, falling to JWU's Joe Ferinde. Ferinde entered the event ranked fourth in the country.
  • Also at 141 pounds, sophomore Michael Derin collected five pins en route to a fifth-place finish.
  • Sophomore Dylan Van Sickell finished fifth at 149 pounds, collecting two majors and three falls.
