Garnet Win One, Lose One As Florida Trip Continues

LAKELAND, Fla. - Swarthmore College Softball split a doubleheader for the second day in a row on Wednesday, losing 10-6 to UMASS-Boston and beating Wheaton 2-1. The Garnet are 5-2 in the early going this season.

Sophomore Maddie Bowe tossed a complete-game gem in the win, pitching seven innings of two-hit softball.

GAME ONE: UMASS-Boston 10, Swarthmore 6

Swarthmore watched an early 6-0 lead disappear as the Beacons scored six of their own in the bottom of the third.

Sophomore Mika Maenaga provided the big blow for the Garnet during the opening surge, doubling to right field to score two runners. Junior Kalli Segel also had and RBI double for Swarthmore.

The game's offense came to a halt as neither team scored in the fourth or fifth, but four runs by UMASS in the sixth ended up being the decider.

GAME TWO: Swarthmore 2, Wheaton 1

Bowe improved to 2-0 in the circle this season in Swarthmore's lowest-scoring game of the season thus far.

Both of Swarthmore's runs came in the third inning as RBI singles from Segel and junior Gabriella Natoli were the difference in the contest.

Bowe didn't allow a run until the sixth inning when the Lyon's scored on a fielder's choice.

Swarthmore completes its spring break trip on Thursday with games against Marietta College at 2:15 p.m. and Plymouth State at 4:30 p.m.
