Women’s Soccer Ties Dickinson in Season Finale

CARLISLE, Pa. – Freshman Madelyn Cunningham (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) recorded a career-high eight saves as the Gettysburg College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 second overtime draw at Dickinson College Saturday night in its season finale.

Gettysburg closes out the year with a record of 8-5-4 and a 4-3-3 mark in Centennial Conference play to finish sixth in the league, while Dickinson (10-3-4, 5-2-3 CC) earned the #4-seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs.

It was the third scoreless draw between Gettysburg and Dickinson as the first one occurred during the 1991 season.

The Bullets went into overtime eight times this season and registered seven shutouts.

Cunningham notched her first save 20 seconds into the opening half as Dickinson's Samantha Knapp marched down the field to be the first to take a shot on goal.

In an evenly-played opening half, the two sides combined for a total of seven shots with both the Bullets and Red Devils having two shots on target.

In the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Bullets took three shots, all which went wide. From there, the Red Devils managed to take five shots with two being on goal. Gettysburg had the final chance to score at the 88th minute from freshman Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood), but her shot went wide.

Senior Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had the only look for the Bullets 1:29 into the first overtime, but the Dickinson goalie saved it.

The Red Devils were aggressive in the second overtime as they took two quick shots and collected four total in the period. In the 108th minute, senior Virginia Sanford (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School) belted the only shot for Gettysburg that went wide.

Dickinson concluded the match outshooting Gettysburg 14-9 and held the 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Cunningham tallied her fifth shutout and collected 36 saves for the Bullets this season.

Despite the loss, Gettysburg's senior class of Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), Hannah Hallos (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge), Miesemer, and Sanford finish their careers with an overall record of 35-22-14 and three Centennial Conference playoff appearances, including a semifinal berth during the 2016 season.
