GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Katherine Sears (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West) and freshman
Katie Cooper (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each posted two victories in a 141-121 loss to No. 18 Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (5-1, 3-1 CC) was right beside Ursinus (5-0, 4-0 CC) in the team scoring for most of the meet. The Bears won nine events total, but the Bullets finished with two of the top three spots in nine of the races.
Sears swept the 500 and 1,000 free competitions. She opened with a strong performance in the 1,000, beating her closest competitor, Katie Schultz from Ursinus, by 11 seconds with a time of 10:49.39. Sears bested Schultz again in the 500, jumping out to an early lead and coasting to a three-second win (5:20.51).
Cooper took the top spot in both breaststroke races. She began the day by moving into sixth place on Gettysburg's all-time list with a time of 1:07.73 in the 100 breaststroke. In the 200, Cooper led from start-to-finish before closing with a time of 2:28.24, which placed her eighth on the school's list.
Sears and Cooper may have doubled up in the win column, but the race of the day belonged to sophomore
Sydney Jaramillo (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) in the 200 IM. For the second consecutive year, Jaramillo beat out two-time conference gold medalist Peyten Lyons, holding off the charging Bear swimmer over the final 50 yards for a 0.03 second victory (2:14.62). Jaramillo also placed third in the 200 fly (2:16.04).
Junior
Kate Crilly (Shrewsbury, N.J./Ranney School) featured in a pair of close races with Ursinus first-year Sophie Lear. Lear won both races, edging Crilly 24.43-24.58 in the 50 and 53.25-54.55 in the 100. Freshman
Cate Kosko (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) finished third in both of those races with times of 25.90 and 56.12, respectively.
Freshman
Katie Jenkins (Bow, N.H./Bow) posted two runner-up performances. She took second in the 200 fly (2:13.31) and equaled that placement in the 100 fly (1:01.35). Senior
Lindsay Hayden (Enfield, Conn./Suffield Academy) was neck-and-neck with Sophie May in the 200 free through the first half of the race, but the Ursinus sophomore held off the senior to win by 0.45 seconds. Hayden notched a season-best 1:58.48.
Gettysburg closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay as Hayden, Cooper, Kosko, and Crilly clocked 3:40.25.
Gettysburg closes out the first semester by hosting an invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
