FORT MYERS, Fla.—Swarthmore Softball began its 2018 spring break trip with a pair of wins on Sunday, winning each game by a single run. Swarthmore beat Curry College in the 9 a.m. game and then topped Nichols College 7-6 in the 11 a.m. game. Swarthmore improved to 3-1 with the wins.
SWARTHMORE 3, CURRY 2
McKenzie Ward won the first game by pitching four innings of four-hit ball, striking out four.
Emily Bowman struck out six batters in three innings to earn the save.
Swarthmore had 10 hits in the win, with Gariella Natoli leading the way with a 3-for-4 game.
Kalli Segel and
Emilie Morse each went 2-for-3.
Kennedy Kings batted in
Marit Vike with a single to right field in the first inning, and Swarthmore added two more runs on an error in the fourth inning.
NICHOLS 6, SWARTHMORE 7
Swarthmore beat Nichols with a walk-off two-out two-RBI double by Segel. The Garnet led 4-3 going into the final inning, but Nichols picked up three runs in the top of the seventh. Swarthmore rallied in the bottom of the seventh.
Frankie Ponziani led off with a walk and advanced to third after back-to-back groundouts.
Down to their last out, the Garnet got a timely double to left from Kings that scored Ponziani. An infield single from
Emilie Morse extended the inning and pump Kings to third. Segel, a sophomore, smashed a double to right center to score both Morse and Kings to tie and then win the game.
Swarthmore plays two games on Monday—Kenyon College at 9 a.m. and Wilmington College at 11 a.m.
