th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 2-1 win over 10
th-ranked Christopher Newport Monday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins struck first, converting a penalty corner at 26:24 in the first half. Freshman
Abby Birk inserted the corner, sending the ball out to classmate
Sarah Matyas. She sent a short pass to junior
Katie McErlean, who took one touch and ripped a low shot past Captains' goalie Olivia Davis.
• Christopher Newport leveled the score midway through the second half, also cashing in on a penalty corner. Jackie Kotoriy sent the corner to Courtney Fiest at the top of the circle. She fired a low shot and Courtnie Greene chipped it over junior
Jodie Baris and into the top of the cage at 53:20.
• The final 10 minutes of regulation saw a flurry of shots on both sides, with neither team able to get the go-ahead goal.
• Five minutes into overtime, Baris came out and stuffed a breakaway shot by Fiest to keep the teams tied. Just three minutes later, the Blue Jays got the win. Brown-Scherer slotted a pass to freshman
Izzy Thompson, who was just subbing in. Thompson dribbled 15 yards and attempted to pass the ball, but it was blocked by a Captain defender. Thompson collected the rebound, dribbled into the circle and centered the ball. Brown-Scherer settled the pass and calmly shot it inside the right post. Â Â
