First-Half Outburst Propels Garnet Past Mules

ALLENTOWN, Pa.—No. 23 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball rolled past the Muhlenberg College Mules 83-65 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Centennial Conference action.

Four Garnet players scored in double figures, and Cam Wiley led Swarthmore's balanced attack with 15 points on a solid 7-for-11 day from the field (63.6 percent).

Conor Harkins pitched in 14 points while sinking four 3-pointers. Nate Shafer scored 12 points in just 18 minutes and finished with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. George Visconti posted 11 points. On the glass, Zac O'Dell led the Garnet with 11 rebounds. Swarthmore finished with 44 rebounds and held Muhlenberg to 35.

Overall, the Garnet were effective from the floor, sinking 47.9 percent of their field goal attempts. The Garnet also improved drastically from their 3-point shooting in the previous game (15.2 percent) and finished with a 33.3 percent success rate from downtown.

Muhlenberg led off the game with a dunk on its first possession, but that glimmer of hope was short-lived for the Mules. Swarthmore's next field goal was a 3-pointer by Harkins with 18:50 to go in the first half, and Swarthmore held onto the lead the rest of the contest.

Muhlenberg pulled within two points halfway through the first period, but Swarthmore exploded with a 25-4 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes to put the game out of reach. Swarthmore would remain ahead by double digits the rest of the game.

Up next for the Garnet is a non-conference showdown at home against the York College Spartans on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
