Welcome to Spring Break Central, your first stop for all things Bethel Royals this spring break. You will find scores, statistics, and team information for all eight teams playing in four states and three different countries: Baseball in Ft. Meyers, FL, softball in Orlando, FL, women's golf in Jacksonville, FL, men's golf in Augusta, GA, men's and women's tennis in Hawaii, women's soccer in Peru and men's soccer in Morocco. Sunday, March 11

• Baseball | Bethel University 12, Skidmore College 1 | Box Score 

Bethel baseball (6-1, 0-0 MIAC) started off their spring break schedule with a 12-1 win over Skidmore College Sunday afternoon. Sam Horner's sac-fly in the first inning put one up on the board for the Royals and they proceeded to add four more runs in the third to stretch their lead to 5-0. A couple of singles from John Leach and Sam Horner and a two-run homer by Austin Ledin capped off a four run fourth inning. Ledin finished the day 4-5 with three runs and three RBI's. Mitch Butvilas went 3-5 with a double, two runs and one RBI. Jake Schubert was 2-4 on the day with a double and a triple, scoring two runs. Carson Selin got the start for BU and picked up his second win on the year. Selin went six innings giving up just 4 hits and one run while striking out five.

• Softball | Bethel University 7, Marian University 8 | Box Score

Bethel fell to Marian University 8-7 on Sunday on the final play of the game. The game was tied at seven with Marian University batting in the bottom of the eighth when an error scored one run for Marian University. Despite the loss, BU did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. The Royals got their offense started in the first inning when Mariah Uphoff singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Bethel then put up four runs in the seventh inning, thanks to Hannah Schmidt's grand slam. Schmidt started the game for the Royals and went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs—two earned—on six hits and striking out four. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Uphoff led the team with two hits apiece. 

• Softball | Bethel University 9, Lakeland University 5 | Box Score

The Royals overcame a loss in their opening game of the Florida trip by defeating Lakeland 9-5. Bethel struck first, scoring on an error in the first inning. After the Muskies tied it up in the third, BU pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth off of Jana Roste's two-RBI single. Bethel tacked on five more runs in the fifth when Amanda Gemuenden, Allie Fauth, and Roste all drove in runs. Gemuenden earned the win inside the circle, which gives her a 3-0 record to begin her college career. The Royals totaled 10 hits, led by Roste, Gemuenden, and Uphoff, who each collected a pair of hits. 

Monday, March 12

• Baseball | Bethel University 6, North Park University 3 | Box Score

BU baseball was back in action Monday with a noon game against against North Park University. The Royals (7-1) came away with a 6-3 win over the Vikings (2-7) in nine innings of play. Sam Horner had a big day for the Royals as his solo shot in the sixth stretched Bethel's lead to 3-0. Horner finished the day 3-3 with two RBI and one run. After having their lead cut to one in the eighth, Bo Lovdahl rallied the troops with a two-run homer in the ninth to bring BU to the final score of 6-3. The Royals also received a big lift from MIAC Player of the Week Austin Ledin, who went 2-5 with one run and one RBI. The Royals are now 2-0 in Ft Myers.

• Women's golf | Bethel University 3.5, Augsburg University 1.5

The Royals took on a familiar foe on Monday, March 12 when facing Augsburg University in a match-play event at St. John's Golf and Country Club in St. Augustine, Florida. Bethel defeated the Auggies 3.5-1.5, as BU won at No. 1, 2, and 3, while tying at No. 5. Christine Piwnica's patch was decided after the 12th hole, while Katie Engelking won on the 14th and Nicole Miller on the 15th. 

• Softball | Bethel University 10, University of Maine at Farmington 16 | Box Score

Bethel softball suffered a 16-10 setback against University of Maine at Farmington. The Royals were able to get the sticks going with 12 hits but it wasn't enough to come away with the win. Katie Stewart went 2-3 with one RBI while Hannah Schmidt went 2-4 with two doubles, three runs and one RBI. Jamie Axelberg went 2-4 at the plate, tallying two RBI.

• Softball | Bethel University 0, Transylvania University 4 | Box Score

The Royals were not quite able to bounce back in their second game of the day as they fell 0-4 to Transylvania University. It was a pitchers duel as the game stayed 1-0 in favor of TU until the sixth inning when BU gave up three runs. Hannah Schmidt went 6.0 innings and gave up just three hits. Megan Bode was 1-3 from the plate with a double.

Tuesday, March 13

• Baseball | Bethel University 19, Alfred State College 3 | Box Score 

Bethel baseball remains undefeated in the sunshine state after their dominant 19-3 victory over Alfred State College. The Royals (8-1) fell behind 0-1 in the first inning to ASC (0-8) but scored 7 unanswered runs to take a commanding lead. Bethel had three five-run innings and tallied 21 hits on the day. Austin Ledin had another standout performance following his MIAC player of the week award as he went 3-4 at the plate, scoring four runs. Bo Lovdahl and Sam Horner each went 3-4 as well: Lovdahl had two RBI and two runs while Horner knocked in three runs and scored two himself. David Cushing took the mound for BU. The Minnetonka native went 6.0 innings and gave up just two runs and five hits while striking-out four.

Wednesday, March 14


• Softball | Hamilton College | Box Score

Bethel Softball followed up their day off with a morning game against Hamilton College. The Royals (5-5) kept the game close through the first five innings but the Continentals (2-2) were able to pull away with a 17-10 win. Jana Roste went 3-4 for the Royals with three RBI on two homers and one double. Wendy Roberts and Amanda Gemuenden each went 2-4 from the plate: Roberts tallied one run and one RBI on a double and a homerun while Gemuenden had one RBI and one triple. The team totaled 13 hits and a season high five home-runs in the game.

• Softball | Bethel 14, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 9 | Box Score

BU (5-5) bounced back in the late morning with a 14-9 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (6-4). The game was back and forth through the first few innings, but a five-run third allowed BU to jump out to a 10-5 lead. The Royals held off the Engineers for a come from behind win. Jana Roste sent two more over the fence to give her four total homers on the day. She finished the game 4-4 with six RBI and three runs. Freshman Allie Fauth went 2-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Hannah Schmidt took the mound for the Royals and went six innings, stuck out three and earned her fifth win on the year. She also went 2-4 from the plate with one home run.

Thursday, March 15

• Baseball | Bethel University 12, Lakeland University 0 | Box Score 

Bethel University's baseball team followed up their day off with a 12-0 statement win over Lakeland University. The Royals (9-1) dominated the Muskies (4-2) in every aspect to get their ninth straight win. Connor Malcolm got the start for the Royals. The right-handed sophomore went eight innings and allowed just seven hits and zero walks while striking out five. The man behind the plate for BU had a great day hitting from it as well, as Mitch Butvilas went 5-of-6 with two doubles and one home run, producing four runs and one RBI. Joey Fredrickson was 3-of-5 with two runs and three RBI. Designated hitter Austin Ledin hit 2-for-4 on the day, scoring two runs and knocking in two more. The senior also had one stolen base. As a team, Bethel totaled 11 RBI on 19 hits.

• Softball | Bethel University 10, Millikin University 7 | Box Score

BU softball faced off against Millikin University Thursday afternoon and took away a 10-7 victory. The Royals (6-6) took an early two-run lead in the first inning off a single from Allie Fauth. The Big Blue (7-5) rallied back to tie the game 2-2 but the Royals were able to hold them off the rest of the way. Freshman shortstop Allie Fauth led the way for BU going 3-4 from the plate with two runs and four RBI. She also tallied four assists in the field. The team had a total of six RBI on 11 hits.

• Softball | Bethel University 4, University of Wisconsin-Stout 13 | Box Score

Game two on the day for BU SB was a match up with the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The Royals (6-6) fell to the Blue Devils (9-1) by a final score of 4-13. Bethel got out to a hot start scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second but UW Stout was able to take over and run away with the contest. Megan Bode went 2-2 for BU while Emily Eaton had one run, one RBI and drew one walk as she went 1-2 from the plate.

Friday, March 16

• Baseball | Bethel University 15, Augustana College (IL) 1 | Box Score

Ten straight wins for BU baseball as they toppled Augustana College by a score of 15-1. The Royals (10-1) had a total of 17 hits in their win over the Vikings (9-3). Mitch Butvilas got the sticks going for the Royals with a single that scored both Horner brothers in the third inning, putting BU up 2-0. A three-run fourth stretched the lead to 5-0 and put the game all but out of reach for Augustana. Sam Horner finished 5-6 with five RBI and two runs including two doubles and a stolen base. John Horner went 3-5 at the plate with four runs and two RBI. Jake Schubert was 2-4 with two runs, two RBI and 1 walk.

• Men's Tennis | Bethel University 2, Hawaii Pacific University 7 | Box Score

After having their first spring break match canceled due to weather, Bethel University men's tennis opened their Hawaii campaign with a match against Hawaii Pacific University. The Royals (4-4, 1-2 MIAC) came up short with a 2-7 loss to the Division II Sharks (1-9). Nick Knudsen and Noah Ridgway highlighted doubles play with anm 8-5 win in the No. 3 doubles match. Peter Lindberg earned a win by default in the No. 6 singles match.

• Softball: Bethel University 5, Endicott College 8 | Box Score

Bethel softball was back in action Friday morning with a 9 a.m. meeting with Endicott College. After gaining a 4-0 lead through two innings, the Royals (6-7) offense stalled and the Gulls (8-2) were able to rally back and hold on for an 8-5 win. Despite the loss, Bethel's Jana Roste continued her impressive spring break play by going 2-3 with one run and one RBI on two doubles. Wendy Roberts also went 2-3 with one run and one RBI.

• Softball | Bethel University 12, University of Southern Maine 7 | Box Score 

BU SB had its final game in Fort Myers Friday as they faced off against the University of Southern Maine. The Royals (7-7) ended the trip on a high note with a 12-7 win over the Huskies (3-5). Heading into the top of the sixth trailing 2-5, the Royals rallied for seven runs to take 9-5 lead. BU added three more in the seventh to ensure the victory. Amanda Gemuenden went 3-4 at the plate for BU with two runs and two RBI. Allie Fauth was 2-2 with three runs and two walks, while Jana Roste went 2-5 with one run and three RBI. Roste finished her trip 18-35 from the plate with 15 RBI, 13 runs and five home runs over a 10 game stretch.

• Women's tennis | Bethel University 9, Chaminade University 0 | Box Score

After having their first match in Hawaii canceled due to weather, Bethel women's tennis played their first match Friday morning against Chaminade University. The Royals (7-1, 3-0 MIAC) swept the Silverswords (0-7) by a score of 9-0. BU won all matches in straight sets, including three shutouts: No. 3 doubles team Sami Hindt and Maddie Lubben won 8-0, Hindt also won No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Meghan Schuler took the No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Mattie Kidder and Mackenzie Novak also had outstanding performances as they each one their singles match 6-0, 6-1.
 
Saturday, March 17


• Baseball | Bethel University 5, Edgewood College 1 | Box Score

Bethel Baseball extended their winning streak to 11 with a 5-1 win over Edgewood College Saturday morning. The Royals (11-1) fell behind 0-1 in the first to the Eagles (3-6) but had a two-run second inning to take the lead. Bethel added a few insurance runs and held off Edgewood thanks to a strong pitching performance from Carson Selin. The right-handed senior went six innings, giving up just one run and three hits while picking up 10 strikeouts. John Leach and Jake Marsh gave BU solid relief efforts as neither player gave up a hit in a combined three innings. Sam Horner continued his impressive spring break performance by going 3-5 with two runs. Horner has recorded at least one hit in all of Bethel's games in Fort Myers thus far and leads the team in batting average on the season (.537). The Royals also got a lift from Bo Lovdahl who was 1-3 with one walk and two RBI. The sophomore first baseman also scored the go ahead run for BU in the second inning.

• Women's tennis | Bethel University 0, Hawaii Pacific University 9 | Box Score

Bethel University women's tennis team finished up its 2018 spring break trip with a match against Division II school Hawaii Pacific University. The Royals (7-2, 3-0 MIAC) fell to the Sharks (11-1) by a score of 0-9. Despite the loss, Mackenzie Novak had a good singles match in which she lost 4-6, 4-6. Sami Hindt put up a good fight in her singles match as well but ended up falling 3-6, 3-6.

Sunday, March 18


• Baseball | Bethel University 6, Johns Hopkins University 5 (12 inn.) | Box Score

Bethel University baseball team (12-1) finished up it's spring break campaign in Ft. Myers with an extra-inning thriller against Johns Hopkins University (7-6). With the game knotted 5-5 in the 12th inning, Austin Ledin sent a one-out pitch over the left-field fence to put BU on top. Jake Marsh delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th to give the Royals their twelfth straight win and a perfect 7-0 record on spring break. Including his go-ahead homer, Austin Ledin finished the day 3-6 with two RBI and one run. Michael Wesner finished 2-3 with three RBI and one run. Sam Horner stayed hot from the plate by going 3-6 with one run. Ledin and Horner also each had their personal season-high's in putouts with 16 and eight respectively. Jake Marsh got the win for BU as he went four innings and gave up two hits, zero runs and zero walks while adding a season-high four strikeouts. Michael Bohlke started the game and gave up four earned runs in eight innings pitched.
