Bullets’ Comeback Falls Short against Stevens

Gettysburg drops 25-21 decision to nationally-ranked Ducks

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College won four of the final five matches, but it wasn't enough to upend nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology as the Ducks held on for a 25-21 victory inside Bream Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (5-4, 0-1 CC) fell behind early against Stevens (7-3, 2-0 CC), which came in ranked seventh by D3wrestle.com and 21st by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Ducks won four of the first five bouts to jump out to a 19-6 lead. Freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) put the Bullets on the board with a forfeit win at 141 pounds.

The hosts mounted a comeback by claiming four wins in the second half of the lineup, but a forfeit at 184 provided the match-clinching points for Stevens.

Junior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his fourth technical fall and third in his last four matches with a 15-0 win at 165. Kowalski posted a takedown, four near-falls, and an escape on the way to improving to 24-4 this season.

Sophomore Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) earned his fifth win in a row with a 6-3 win at 174. After going down 3-0, Roskos pulled off a reversal in the second round and tallied an escape and takedown in the third period. The riding-time advantage gave the sophomore his final point.

Freshman Mike Iodice (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored the final two points to earn a 4-2 win over Colin Myles at 197. With the score tied 2-2 at the start of the third period, Iodice picked up an escape and secured the riding-time point for the win.

Gettysburg's final points came courtesy of junior heavyweight Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep), who came into the match ranked eighth by D3wrestle and 10th by the NWCA. After a scoreless opening period, Triandafilou racked up seven points in the second with an escape, takedown, and near-fall against Joseph Morena. The riding time advantage gave the junior an 8-0 major decision and improved his season record to 22-4.

Earlier in the afternoon, Stevens won six of the first seven matches on the way to a 27-16 victory over McDaniel College.
