GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mary Washington won nine of 14 events and the Eagles handed Gettysburg a 147-115 setback in non-conference women's swimming action Saturday afternoon at the Bullets Pool.
Competing in their first meet since Dec. 3, the Bullets (5-2) registered four individual victories. Senior
Caroline Moyer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) was a double-winner, capturing both the 100-breaststroke (1:08.88) and the 200-breaststroke (2:30.95). Freshman
Kate Crilly (Shrewsbury, N.J./Ranney School) claimed the 100-freestyle (54.72) while sophomore
Paige Griesse (Granville, Ohio/Granville) touched first in the 200-freestyle (2:01.25).
Mary Washington (6-2), which received votes in the latest CSCAA Division III national poll, trailed just once on the day. After winning the first two events the Eagles led by 10, only to see the Bullets rally with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-free to assume a 29-26 lead. Following Griesse were sophomore
Lindsay Hayden (Enfield, Conn./Suffield Academy), who placed second in 2:01.96, and freshman
Karley Devine (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who took third in 2:02.15.
The Eagles answered with a victory in the 100-backstroke to go up by eight, but Moyer came back with her triumph in the 100-breast, cutting the deficit to 49-44. However, Mary Washington won the next two events and led 74-57 at the first break.
Crilly posted her victory in the 100-free to cut the deficit to 12 (81-69), but that's as close as the Bullets would get as Mary Washington gradually pulled away, winning four of the last six events.
Gettysburg was credited with the victory in the 200-freestyle relay after the winning squad from Mary Washington was disqualified. Crilly, sophomore
Johnna Hock (Timonium, Md./St. Pauls School for Girls), Griesse, and senior
Carlin Baker (Frostburg, Md./Fort Hill) were timed at 1:42.25 in the event.
Griesse added a runner-up finish in the 500-freestyle (5:24.56) while senior
Nicolette Gibbons (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) took second in the 1,000-freestyle (11:10.28).
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action next Saturday, when it hosts Swarthmore College at 2 p.m.
