SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Elizabeth Hilfrank (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) placed seventh out of 108 runners and the Gettysburg College women's cross country team opened the 2017 season at the Shippensburg University Galen Piper Challenge Friday evening.
 
The Bullets finished with a team score of 105 and placed fourth among seven teams. Dickinson won the meet with 44 points, edging out Shippensburg (which competes in Division II) by 10 points. Elizabethtown took third with 58 points and was followed by Gettysburg, Shippensburg Alumni (112), York (158), and Frostburg State (212).
 
The race marked the fourth year in a row that Gettysburg opened the season with a night meet. The Bullets also started the season under the lights at Ship in 2014 and 2016 and opened with a night meet at Dickinson in 2015.
 
Hilfrank was clocked at 15:09 over the 4,000-meter course and placed just 11 seconds behind race winner Brenna McNamee of Elizabethtown. Junior Sarah Rinehart (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) was close behind, finishing 14th in 15:22.
 
Freshman Michelle O'Malley (Locust, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was the Bullets' next finisher, taking 30th in 16:06. Rounding out the team score were junior Paige Wesolowski (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional), who placed 37th in 16:20, and sophomore Hailey Moseman (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), who took 39th in 16:21.
 
Finishing as displacers were freshman Devyn Heinzerling (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), who placed 48th in 16:40, and junior Madison Fox (Akron, Pa./Ephrata), who was 49th in 16:44.
 
The Bullets return to action on Friday, when they take on Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall at the 37th annual Little Three Meet, hosted by Dickinson.
