Softball Caps Best CC Season with a Sweep

Gettysburg defeats Muhlenberg 6-5 and 4-0

ALLENTOWN, Pa.  – Junior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) tossed a complete-game shutout and freshman Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) posted five hits to help Gettysburg College post its best record ever in the Centennial Conference with a sweep at Muhlenberg College Saturday.

Gettysburg (19-13, 14-2 CC) rallied for two runs in its final at bat to pull off a 6-5 decision in the opening game at Muhlenberg (12-24, 4-12 CC). Clauser allowed just five hits and the Bullets posted all four of their runs in the fourth inning for a 4-0 decision in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Orange and Blue finished with the program's best record as a member of the Centennial Conference. The previous best win total in conference play was 13 in 1999, 2003, and 2005.

Gettysburg seized the lead initially in game one with two unearned runs in the first inning, the first coming home on a single by senior Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) and the second scoring on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff). The Bullets tacked on two more runs on a fielder's choice by sophomore Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) and a single by junior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) in the second inning to push the lead to 4-0.

The advantage was short-lived as Muhlenberg posted two runs in the bottom of the second frame before tying the game with two more in the third. Baker threw out her league-best 12th would-be base stealer in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the runner from third managed to scamper home to put the Mules in front 5-4.

After coming up short with runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, Gettysburg converted its opportunities during its final turn at bat. The Bullets rapped out four-straight hits with a single by Folfas knotting the game. The go-ahead run came across on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field by sophomore Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic).

Senior Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win and improve to 7-1 in conference play this season. She allowed five runs, nine hits, five walks, and struck out three. It was the senior's 55th career victory, moving her into a tie for first with Shannon Kiry '06 for the program's all-time lead.

Baker finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Folfas and sophomore Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each went 2-for-4, the former driving in two runs and the latter scoring twice. Julie finished 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Gettysburg cruised through game two behind Clauser's first shutout of the season. The junior hurler allowed only one baserunner to reach scoring position through the first five frames. In the sixth, she ran into a little trouble with a pair of hits with one out, but a force-out at third base and a liner to second closed the inning. Clauser capped the victory with a perfect seventh.

The Bullets did all of their damage in the fourth. Gettysburg loaded the bases and senior Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) plated the first run with a single to center field. Jonik followed with a bases-loaded walk and Baker smacked a two-run single to close the scoring.

Clauser improved to 9-4 this season after giving up one walk and striking out six. Baker tallied a pair of hits and two RBI, while Doi and Lenoardo each finished 2-for-3.

Gettysburg will host the 2018 Centennial Conference Championship at Bobby Jones Field on May 4-6. The remaining teams that have clinched spots in the tournament are McDaniel College (21-18-1, 12-4 CC) and Haverford College (19-11, 9-7 CC). Franklin & Marshall College (17-21, 8-8 CC) currently sits in the fourth and final spot, but a doubleheader sweep by Washington College (14-20, 6-8 CC) against Muhlenberg on Sunday could bump the Diplomats and put the Shorewomen into the field.

More information regarding the CC Championship will be made available on Monday.
