MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's track and field registered a trio of top-three finishes and the Bullets placed 10th among 19 teams at the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.
Junior
Matt Robinson (Taneytown, Md./Pinkerton Academy [N.H.]) led the Orange and Blue with a victory in the 1,500-meter run, marking his second-straight victory in the event. Running against seven other competitors in the fastest of four heats, he edged out Alex Smith of York (Pa.) College by 0.51 seconds. With a time of 4:04.47, he lowered his personal record (PR) by three seconds. A total of 51 runners competed in the event.
Robinson completed a strong double by placing fifth among 37 competitors in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:01.92.
Sophomore
Ken Barnes (Edison, N.J./Westminster School [Conn.]) also turned in an impressive performance, placing second out of 22 competitors in the long jump with a collegiate PR of 21-6 3/4. Barnes was the top collegiate finisher in the event, finishing just a half inch behind John Capitosti of IUP.
Junior
Joe Amadio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) added a third-place in the triple jump (39-9 1/4) while freshman
Nicholas Grissinger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Milton Hershey) took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 59.22.
Also breaking the top-eight were freshman
Matt Simmers (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills), who placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (18.65), and senior
Ty Abdul-Karim (Washington, D.C./Woodberry Forest [Va.]), who came in eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.65).
Junior
Mike Cortese (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township) contributed a ninth-place finish in the hammer with a throw (120-10) that places him in a tie for seventh in school history. In addition, classmate
Thad Cwiklinski (Glen Rock, Pa./York Catholic) came in 13th in a field of 50 in the 400-meter dash (52.91).
The Bullets continue their season when they compete at the Messiah Invitational and Multi Thursday through next Saturday.
