SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Baseball defeated Johns Hopkins for the first time in seven years on Saturday and ultimately split the doubleheader with the Blue Jays.
It was the first Centennial Conference action of the season for both teams. The Garnet improved to 14-6 overall on the season, and Hopkins is 11-9.
Game One: Swarthmore 3, Johns Hopkins 2
Swarthmore snapped a streak of 12 straight losses to Johns Hopkins with a three-run eighth inning.
The Garnet entered the inning down 2-0 behind eight solid frames from sophomore
Sawyer Lake, who struck out nine batters, walked zero and allowed just five hits. He's now 3-1 this season.
With just two hits at that point, sophomore
AJ Liu started Swarthmore's rally with a one-out single. The next batter, junior Charlie Levitt, walked.
The run scoring began with a double by sophomore
Cole Beeker that nearly left the park. Shortly thereafter, Levitt scored on a passed ball to tie the game, and a single by junior
Jackson Roberts resulted in the go-ahead run.
Sophomore
Jack Corkery came on in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season.
Game Two: Swarthmore 6, Johns Hopkins 10
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Swarthmore senior
Matt Palmer scored on a misplayed fly ball by Hopkins' right fielder. The game remained tied until the Blue Jays scored three in the top of the fourth inning, taking a lead they'd never give up.
Garnet freshman
Coleson Hebble went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Beeker and Elliott added two hits apiece.
Junior
Ricky Conti pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs, falling to 4-2 in 2018.
The Garnet continue conference play with games against Washington College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday. The first is in Chestertown, Md., and the second is at Clothier Field.
