Schreck Brothers Lead Men's Lacrosse Past Muhlenberg in Season Opener, 11-7

Duo Combine for Five Goals

Montclair, NJ – Junior midfielder  Michael Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) scored three times while brother Zach Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) picked up two goals and one assist as Montclair State knocked off Muhlenberg College, 11-7 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ, North Warren) stopped 14 shots as the Red Hawks (1-0) won their season opener for the fourth time in the last five years while picking up their second straight victory over the Mules (0-1). Muhlenberg leads the all-time series, 5-4.

Steven Casella (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood), Pat Farrell (Essex Fells, NJ / West Essex)  and Tom Glancy (Short Hills, NJ / Morristown-Beard) had two goals apiece for the Mules, who were originally scheduled to host the game but had to switch venues after the recent barrage of snowstorms made Muhlenberg's Scott Wood Stadium unplayable.

Zach Schreck gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead 3:01 into the contest as he whipped a shot from the left side past goalkeeper Adam Schlauch (Tewksbury, NJ / Rutgers Prep). The Mules would tie the game late in the period when Jason Mertz (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) set up John Hetzel (Mendham, NJ / Seton Hall Prep), however the Red Hawks took the lead back with 2:19 to play on the first of two goals by Michael Jevic (Voorhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.

The goal started a run of four straight for MSU which extended the lead to 3-1 just 32 seconds into the second on Michael Schreck's first tally of the game. Zach Schreck assisted on Jevic's goal with 10:27 to go and freshman defender Ryan Young (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) put back in a rebound of his own shot at the seven-minute mark for a 5-1 MSU advantage.

Casella snapped the run with a man-up tally with 5:37 to play before half but goals by Zach Schreck and Marc Scoran (Old Bridge, NJ, Old Bridge) 45 seconds apart put the Red Hawks in front 7-2 with 2:43 remaining before half.

Glancy would get a goal back with 99 seconds left in the first half and scores by Casella and Farrell to open the third period pulled the Mules within 7-5 with 9:48 to go in the third. Michael Schreck answered 34 seconds later off a feed from Brett Mangan (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) and his third goal on the man-up opportunity extended the MSU lead to four goals. The Red Hawks punctuated the period with a full-field run with Dorn making the long pass into the attack zone which was picked up by Jevic who found Mangan in front of the net just ahead of the end of period horn as MSU led 10-5.

Farrell and Glancy would each score around a goal by the Red Hawks' Connor Cunningham (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) for the final margin.

Freshman Blasé Mantineo had an outstanding game in his collegiate debut going 17-of-21 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Michael Schreck added five ground balls and three caused turnovers with junior defender collecting four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Blake Vernam forced two turnovers and recorded a pair of ground balls.
