The Muhlenberg baseball team closed out its Spring Break trip to Florida on a high note, sweeping Waynesburg in a doubleheader.
After squandering some solid pitching performances earlier in the week, the Mules (5-7) broke out their bats, combining for 18 runs and 22 hits in 13 innings in the 8-0, 10-9 sweep.
As much as the offense, the first game belonged to junior
RJ Hennessey, who tossed a four-hitter for his first career shutout. The righty did not walk a batter and set a career high with nine strikeouts. Hennessey
(pictured above) worked out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in the fourth with a strikeout and a groundout and went on to retire the side in order in each of the last three innings, finishing the game by setting down the last 11 batters he faced.
Junior
Matt Riebesell ended Muhlenberg's scoring drought at 22 innings by singling in junior
Justin Revel (2-for-4) with the first run of the game with two outs in the third. Sophomore
Billy Brittingham followed with his fourth career home run to give the Mules a 3-0 lead.
Riebesell, who went 3-for-4, and sophomore
Sam Arnold each hit two-run singles in a five-run fifth inning.
The nightcap was a different type of game, with the Yellow Jackets (4-6) twice coming back from deficits of three or more runs to tie. Muhlenberg had the answer both times, however, scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded passed ball.
Junior
Chris Grillo went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Freshman
Robert Cappadona extended his hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-3, two-RBI effort.
Junior
Stephen Koester also drove in two runs, and junior
Kenny Freid had a pair of hits, including an RBI triple. Sophomore
John Serruto scored three times.
After Muhlenberg took the lead for the last time, sophomore
Matthew D'Ambrosia slammed the door in the top of the seventh, striking out the side to earn his second win of the season. Of the eight batters he retired in relief, five came on strikeouts.
