Second-Half Rally Pushes LVC Past Men’s Basketball

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's basketball team held the 39-35 advantage at the half, but Lebanon Valley College rallied back in the second half by shooting 57.6 percent from the field to take the 84-80 win on the final day of Penn State Harrisburg Tip-Off Tournament in Middletown, Pa Sunday afternoon.

Junior guard Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) was named to the all-tournament team after his two-day outstanding performance as he registered 36 points, 20 rebounds, and five assists. Today, he accumulated his first double-double of the season by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bullets. Junior guard Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) tallied 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists while junior guard Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) posted 10 points and sophomore forward Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) added eight rebounds, six points, two assists, and two steals.

The Orange and Blue finished with a 44-40 edge on the glass and broke the single game 3-point field goals attempt record by ending the game with 36. The previous record was 34 attempts against Washington and Lee University back on Nov. 16, 2014.

Six players for Lebanon Valley knotted double-digit scoring with Jordan Abdo leading the team with 19 points and six rebounds. Zach Tucker contributed 17 points, nine assists, and six rebounds for the Dutchmen, who shot 52.4 percent from the field as a team.

The Bullets and the Dutchmen traded off baskets constantly throughout the first seven minutes of the opening half. Gettysburg started pulling away, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Close and freshman Jack Rooney (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), over the next few minutes to help fuel a 13-3 run to push its largest lead in the half, 28-17, with 10:03 remaining. From that point until 5:18 on the clock, the Dutchmen used a 11-3 run to get within three, 31-28. The two squads continued to take turns exchanging points, but the Burg closed the half outscoring the Dutchmen 8-7 to hold the 39-35 advantage at intermission.

The second half paved the way for a tightly contested battle as LVC opened with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes while the Bullets spurted a 7-0 run of their own two minutes later. A free throw by Justin Baker tied the contest at 50-50 with 14:42 on the clock and propelled the Dutchmen an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 61-52. During the next several minutes, the Orange and Blue crawled their way back to get within two points on a couple of different occasions, but the Dutchmen never gave up the lead. The Bullets threatened to retake the lead after Duffey hit a clutch 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining, but LVC's Zach Tucker made three of his four free throws in the final 16 seconds to secure the win. The Dutchmen outscored the Bullets 49-41 in the second half and went 19-of-33 (57.6 percent) from the field.

The Bullets take on York College (Pa.) for their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.
