Softball Honors Six Seniors

The Muhlenberg softball team honored its six senior players before dropping two games to a tough Gettysburg squad, 6-5 and 4-0, on Senior Day.

The Mules (12-24, 4-10 CC) battled from behind to take a 5-4 lead in the first game, but the Bullets (18-13, 14-2 CC), who clinched the top spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs before the day started, scored two runs in the seventh inning and retired the Mules in order in the final frame to get the win.

Senior Amelia Shelley led the team with five hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 effort in the second game. Senior Haley Fedak and junior Kristina Qualben each had hits in both games as well.

The Bullets started both games with a 4-0 lead, but Muhlenberg rallied back with five unanswered runs over the course of three innings in the early game. Qualben doubled home the first run in the bottom of the second, and sophomore Sydney Carey followed with an RBI single to center that scored Shelley.

Senior Karissa Astrella scored the next run off fellow senior Hanna Caiola's RBI single in the third. Carey then slashed another single that plated Shelley, tying the game at 4-4. Fedak scored the go-ahead run one inning later to make it 5-4.

Senior Hayley Peterson pitched into the seventh inning in her final home start, striking out two in her longest outing of the season.

Fedak pitched the entire second game, finishing with seven strikeouts. She retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced in her 13th complete game of the season.

Senior Paige Seitz, who has missed the entire season to injury, started the first game at first base before being replaced after the first pitch.

The six seniors have combined to record 445 hits, 204 runs, 90 doubles, 10 home runs and 194 RBI in their careers. Peterson and Fedak have combined for 39 wins and 366 strikeouts over 632 innings in 124 games on the mound.
