GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) and junior
Nick Cox (Purcellville, Va./Ponte Vedra) each won three individual events as Gettysburg College opened its season with a pair of big wins over Centennial Conferences foes in the Bullets Pool.
Gettysburg (2-0) won 11 of 14 races to easily out-distance Washington College (169-92) and Dickinson College (195-64) in the team's first home dual in front of fans since the 2020 Centennial Conference Championship.
The Bullets jumped out to a hot start as Cox, sophomore
Declan Sheeran (McLean, Va./McLean), senior
Oliver Pickering (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), and freshman
Cort Hobelmann (Nashville, Tenn./Owensboro Catholic) easily won the 200 medley relay by over three seconds. Both Cox as the lead and Hobelmann as the anchor recorded the fastest splits in their respective segments as the team finished in 1:35.26.
Proxmire was back to form with his usual wins in the 200 free (1:44.53) and 500 free (4:43.46), winning the latter event by over 18 seconds. The senior showed off his sprint speed as well, chasing down the competition to win the 100 free in 47.70.
Cox swept the backstroke races, claiming the 100-yard race by over two seconds (51.22) and adding a win in the 200 (1:53.60). The junior polished off the individual hat trick by claiming the 100 fly in 52.72.
Pickering posted a pair of individual wins. The program-record holder in the 200 fly, the senior powered his way to a win in the event with a time of 1:57.90. After logging a third-place finish in the 100 free (48.45), Pickering capped his day with a win in the 200 IM (1:57.71).
Sophomore
Luke McKenna (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford Area) and Hobelmann accounted for the team's remaining victories. McKenna easily out-distanced the field in the 1,000 free, winning the race by over 24 seconds with a time of 10:00.96. The sophomore also finished third in the 200 fly (2:01.82). Hobelmann followed up his anchor performance in the 200 medley by winning the 50 free in 21.38. He also finished third in the 200 back (1:58.77).
Sophomore
Hunter Sundlun (Richmond, Va./Saint Christopher's School) posted a trio of top-three finishes. Sundlun placed second to Proxmire in both the 200 free (1:47.45) and 100 free (48.41), while finishing third in the 100 fly (54.81). Sophomore
Jack Murphy (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) also had to settle for a runner-up showing behind Proxmire, touching the wall second in the 500 free at 5:01.73. Gettysburg's final runner-up performance came from sophomore
Charlie Cross (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) in the 200 breast (2:12.93).
Gettysburg hosts Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m.
