Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Wins Third Straight in Shootout

The Muhlenberg field hockey team extended its winning streak to three with a 2-1 shootout win at Dickinson.

In the fourth round of the penalty shootout, senior Stephi Rydgren lifted the ball over the goalkeeper's left shoulder and into the cage to give the Mules (3-4, 3-0) an insurmountable 2-0 lead.

The Mules are 3-0 in the CC for the second time in three years; prior to 2016 they hadn't won their first three league games since 2007.

The shootout win was the first ever for the Mules, who fell to Elizabethtown in their first shootout just two weeks ago. Muhlenberg last won a game on penalty strokes during the 1998 season, coincidentally, against Dickinson.

Rydgren's game-winning penalty shootout attempt came a round after sophomore Morgan Tietz took a diving shot in front of the end line near the left side of the cage, finding the cage after her initial attempt was deflected seconds earlier.

Junior Jordan Segrave was spectacular throughout the game, making a career-high 16 saves and holding the Red Devils (2-6, 1-2) scoreless on all four of their shootout attempts. Her previous high in saves was six.

Muhlenberg took an early lead in the second minute of play when Rydgren tipped in senior Emily Davis' strong pass from the top of the circle at the left post, scoring her second goal in three games.

Dickinson tied the score midway through the second half.

Freshman Megan Webber made a defensive save in the first half, and sophomore Sophie Beeler (pictured above) recorded one in the first overtime to preserve the tie.
