Game Recap: Baseball |

Bullets Fall Twice at Penn State Harrisburg

Harrisburg, Pa. – After a nine day break due to inclement weather, the Gettysburg College baseball team lost twice in the last inning as they returned to the diamond Tuesday afternoon to take on Penn State Harrisburg in a non-conference doubleheader. This was the Bullets first action since returning from their spring break trip in Florida.

In the opener, sophomore Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J. /Princeton Day School) got the Bullets on the board when he ripped a home run to cut the Lions lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning.  The Bullets (5-10) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa. /Hershey) hit a double to plate two runs.

The Lions (10-3) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up at 5-5. Augustus responded for the Bullets in the top of the seventh when he single singled in a run to give Gettysburg the 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the final inning.

Unfortunately, the Bullets were not able to hold on as the Lions rallied for two runs in their last at-bat to defeat the Bullets 7-6.

Augustus finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Freshman Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y. /Garden City) pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief for the Bullets giving up just one run and striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Bullets jumped out to a 3-0 lead when sophomores Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J. /Princeton) and Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) both hit in RBIs in the top of the first inning.  The Lions responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to make the game 3-2.

LaCoe was able to extend the Bullets lead to 4-2 when he singled in a run in the top of the second but the Lions once again responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up at 4-4.

The game was still tied heading into the fifth inning, which was declared the final inning due to darkness. Penn State's Zach Koroneos hit a solo run in the bottom of the inning to take down the Bullets 5-4 as they fell for second time in walk-off fashion on the day.

LaCoe finished 2-for-3 on the game with a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn. /Hall) tossed three hitless innings of relief for the Bullets while striking out three.

Gettysburg will play again tomorrow in their home opener at Kirchhoff Field when they take on Juniata College at 3:30 p.m.
