Haverford Tops Gettysburg in Overtime

Bullets drop 2-1 decision on the road

HAVERFORD, Pa.The Gettysburg College field hockey team suffered a 2-1 overtime setback at Haverford College in Centennial Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (6-5, 3-2 CC) produced the game's first shot – an attempt by junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) that was blocked in the 10th minute. That would be the visitor's only look at the cage in the opening half. Haverford (5-5, 1-4 CC) posted eight shots in the first 35 minutes, but junior goalie Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) stopped all four shots on goal.

The Bullets struck first 20 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) knocked the ball in the direction of the cage and classmate Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) was there to tip it home for her fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute.

Caputo picked up her fifth and final save on a shot by Ravenel Davis with less than eight minutes to go to preserve the lead, but Haverford continued to press, eventually securing a penalty corner with under four minutes left. The Fords made the most of the opportunity with Ariana Sulpizio tipping in a pass from Roxy Vassighi to tie the game.

The hosts pressed the action to start overtime, forcing sophomore defender Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) to make a defensive save in the 73rd minute. Haverford secured the game-winning goal 30 seconds later as Lucy Tortolani redirected a pass from Caroline Aronowitz.

Haverford led in shots (14-7) and penalty corners (10-5).

Gettysburg returns to action at home against No. 12 Franklin & Marshall College (10-2, 5-1 CC) on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m.
