Alyssa Rose converted a penalty kick early in the second half for the lone score as the Muhlenberg women's soccer team completed a perfect opening weekend with a 1-0 home win against Susquehanna.
The Mules are 2-0 for the first time since 2014, and their second win came against a strong River Hawks squad that went 13-3-4 and earned its second straight NCAA Tournament bid last year.Â
Scoring chances were hard to come by in the first half, but the field opened up for both teams at the start of the second half. Muhlenberg finally cashed in after freshman
Emily DeAngelo connected a pass to senior
Sarah Hunter on the Susquehanna side of the field. Hunter
(pictured above)Â dribbled into the box, lost possession and was tripped as she chased after the loose ball.
Rose converted the PK with 33:58 showing on the clock for her eighth career goal.
The Mules withstood pressure from the River Hawks (1-1) to make the lead stand up in a physical game that featured three yellow cards in the final 11 minutes. Senior
Libby Juliano made four saves for her 13th career shutout and got some late help from Hunter, who normally plays higher up on the field but finished at right back after one of Muhlenberg's starting backs was injured.
