ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) belted her first career home run to help Gettysburg College capture a victory in game two and earn a split in a non-conference doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College on Thursday.
Gettysburg (11-11) dropped the opening game 7-4 as Lebanon Valley (11-9) scored five runs over the final three frames. Folfas connected on a three-home run in the third inning of the nightcap to put the Bullets in front on the way to a 6-4 decision in the nightcap.
The visitors trailed throughout game one as the Flying Dutchmen scored an unearned run in the first inning before tacking one more in the third and two more on a single by Kate Whelski in the fourth inning.
Gettysburg closed the gap in the top of the fifth. The Bullets loaded the bases on a lead-off triple by sophomore
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff), a single by pinch-hitter
Nicole Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), and a walk to pinch-hitter
Jessica Ken-Kwofie (Westfield, N.J./Kent Place School). Julie scored on a groundout and both Farese and Ken-Kwofie bolted home on a two-run double by sophomore
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy).
Lebanon Valley padded the lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bullets managed to get one run back on a single by freshman
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) in their final at bat.
Jonik finished 2-for-4 with a run, stolen base, and two RBI. Baker went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Baker put Gettysburg ahead in the nightcap with a run-scoring double to center field in the top of the first inning. The Flying Dutchmen came right back with two runs in the home half of the frame to take the lead.
An error with two outs kept Gettysburg's offense alive in the third inning and Folfas took full advantage, blasting her first collegiate homer to left field to regain a the lead 4-2.
Lebanon Valley forced a tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The final offensive push of the game came for the visitors in the sixth. Julie connected on a one-out double and scored on an attempted groundout that resulted in an error. Farese scored an insurance run on a fielder's choice to make it 6-4.
Sophomore
McKenzie Somers (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) allowed just two hits and no runs over the final two innings to earn her first career save. Junior
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) improved to 6-3 after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.
Gettysburg hosts Ursinus College for Senior Day in a Centennial Conference doubleheader this Saturday at 1 p.m.
