Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Cole Fox made 12 saves in his first career start to help lead the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team to an 8-6 win over Widener on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Clothier Field.
After three low-scoring quarters that saw the teams combine for only seven goals, both offenses caught fire to completely change the complexion of the game. Senior
Andrew Preiser, who set up a
Chris Thomson marker at the end of the third, found the back of the net with 9:30 left in the fourth to give the Garnet a 5-3 lead.
Widener (0-2) rallied to tie the game at 5-all with 5:01 left by getting two straight strikes from Marc LaVine, but the Garnet responded by taking advantage of a man-up opportunity for the second time and getting a goal from Braden DeWan at the 3:54 mark to go ahead 6-5.
The pendulum continued to swing back and forth through the final minutes, as Vince Marra scored to tie the game for fourth time at 6-6 directly on a delayed penalty directly after the ensuing faceoff. Swarthmore, however, recovered and got markers from DeWan and junior
Will Black. Preiser and Thomson assisted on the plays to give the Garnet a two-goal victory.
Fox made a career-high 12 saves on 41 shot attempts for Swarthmore, which avenged last season's loss to the neighboring Pride. Chris Treat stopped 14 shots on 37 attempts for Widener. Swarthmore was 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, which proved to be the difference, while Widener came up empty on two chances. Led by sophomore
Stephen Ducey's nine, the Garnet also had a 33-27 in ground balls.
Swarthmore (1-1) returns to action when it hosts Drew on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
