Thompson Leads Johns Hopkins to 5-2 Win at Muhlenberg

Thompson Scores a Pair of Goals

The Basics
• Score: #16 Johns Hopkins-5, Muhlenberg-2
• Records: JHU (10-1, 5-0 CC) • MC (4-6, 4-1 CC)
• Location: Allentown, PA • Scotty Wood Stadium
• The Short Story: In a battle of the only two unbeatens left in the Centennial Conference, the 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team topped host Muhlenberg, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Muhlenberg jumped on top early when Megan Webber scored off a penalty corner just 4:50 into the game. Hopkins answered less than seven minutes later off a corner of its own. Junior Katie McErlean dribbled inside the circle and slotted home the tying goal. Her goal ignited a run of five straight goals for the Blue Jays.
• Freshman Izzy Thompson then put the Blue Jays on top in at the 22:25-mark when she scored off a scramble in front of the Mules' cage. Freshman Abby Birk pushed the lead to two early in the second half when she collected her own rebound and lifted it over Jordan Segrave.
• Thompson grabbed her second of the game at 52:18 off another scramble in the circle. Sophomore Michaela Corvi made it a 5-1 game less than three minutes later. She made a nifty move around her defender and beat Segrave from in tight.
• Muhlenberg got one back, scoring again off a corner. Morgan Tietz inserted the corner, sending it out to Sarah Raab, who scored on a hard shot.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 20-8 all-time against Muhlenberg and wins in Allentown for the first time 2012. The Blue Jays' five goals are the most they've scored in the series since a 5-4 overtime win at Muhlenberg on September 29, 2006. The five goals also match their season high.
• Hopkins' 10-1 record is its best through 11 games since 2008, when JHU started the year 11-0.

Inside the Box Score
• Thompson's two goals are her first career multi-goal game.
• Hopkins outshot Muhlenberg, 15-4, while the Mules had a 9-8 advantage in corners.

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 10 as the Blue Jays host the McDaniel Green Terror. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
