Field Hockey Cruises Past Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. -- Swarthmore College Field Hockey upped its record to 3-1 on the season with a 5-1 victory over Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon.

The four-goal margin of victory is the largest for the Garnet since it beat Bryn Athyn College 9-0 on Sept. 27 of last season. That was 12 games ago. The Garnet haven't scored this many goals in a game since then.

There were five different goal scorers for Swarthmore in the game: freshman forward Marion Carr, sophomore forward Halsey Hutchinson, sophomore forward Ali Baratta, senior forward Kathleen Carmichael and sophomore midfielder Samie Martin.

Carr scored the first goal of her career just 5:51 into the game on an assist from Martin. Martin, who didn't record a point last season, is now tied with Baratta and Carmichael for the team lead with five.

Hutchinson scored for the first time this season on an assist from senior midfielder Riya Garg during the 22nd minute. Baratta scored unassisted for the second game in a row just over five minutes later.

Carmichael assisted Baratta's goal during Swarthmore's 1-0 over Susquehanna on Wednesday. Baratta returned the favor on Carmichael's score during the 51st minute on Saturday, just 23 seconds after the Mighty Macs scored their only goal.

Martin scored her goal assisted by Carmichael with 7:27 remaining in the game.

Senior Zelda Bank played goalie in the first half and made three saves. Freshman Aron Lankford relieved Bank in the second half but didn't make any saves.

The Garnet will try to begin a season 4-1 for the second year in a row with a game at Stockton University in Pomona, N.J., on Wednesday. Swarthmore beat the Ospreys 1-0 in a shootout last season.
