Fourth-ranked Bullets Win Shootout with No. 10 F&M

Gettysburg takes down Diplomats 16-12

LANCASTER, Pa. Junior Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) and sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each scored three goals and fourth-ranked Gettysburg College avenged an overtime loss in the Centennial Conference championship game last season with a 16-12 victory over No. 10 Franklin & Marshall College Wednesday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

On the 60th anniversary of the long-time rivalry, Gettysburg (9-1, 2-0 CC) and Franklin & Marshall (7-2, 1-1 CC) combined for the third-most goals in series history. The victory also moved Head Coach Hank Janczyk within two wins of reaching 400 in his career at Gettysburg.

Harvey posted a season high for goals, while Kolen recorded his team-best sixth game with at least a hat trick this spring. Senior Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) tallied two goals, an assist, eight ground balls, and 16 face-off wins. Sophomore Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) posted two goals and an assist and freshman Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) racked up two goals and two helpers.

Kevin Mollihan scored five goals and dished out an assist for Franklin & Marshall. Luke Keating added three goals and two assists, while Sean Rogers posted a hat trick.

The Diplomats beat the Bullets 9-8 in overtime in last season's conference final and they came out firing Wednesday with opening goals by Harry Rice and Luke Keating.

Fulgione kick-started Gettysburg's offense by racing straight to the cage after claiming a face-off victory seven seconds after Keating's goal. McCormick had a hand in the next two goals of the opening period, scoring unassisted and handing out the assist to junior Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) for a 3-2 lead.

A non-releasable penalty at the start of the second quarter set up Franklin & Marshall for a pair of goals and a 4-3 lead, but a quick transition up the field by the Bullets was capped off by a goal by senior Noah Pompan (Studio City, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) to tie the game with 10:39 on the clock.

Pompan's goal kicked off a 5-1 period-ending run by the hosts. The run was punctuated by sophomore defender Mitch Wykoff's (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) first career goal off the face-off with 4:20 to go in the quarter. Gettysburg led 8-5 at the break.

At the start of the third quarter, the Diplomats cut the deficit with three of the first four goals. Rogers pulled the visitors within a goal (9-8) with 6:53 left in the frame.

After winning the next face-off, Fulgione dished it to Kolen for a goal seven seconds later. It was the start of another 5-1 run by the Bullets which ended with a tally by Kolen for a 14-9 lead with 10:59 to play in the fourth quarter.

Franklin & Marshall would get no closer than three in the final eight minutes, while Harvey polished off the scoring after causing a failed clear with less than two minutes left.

Gettysburg finished with the edge in shots (41) and ground balls (36-29), while winning 16-of-30 face-offs.

Sophomore Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) posted three caused turnovers and five ground balls for the Gettysburg defense. Senior Nick Hill (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) recorded two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior goalie Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) posted nine saves and claimed his 49th career victory in goal.

Gettysburg resumes action at home against Muhlenberg College this Saturday at 1 p.m.
