OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior
Mike Risser (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) scored the game-winning goal with 2:52 left in overtime and the sixth-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team rallied for another dramatic victory, winning 7-6 at No. 15 Stevenson Saturday evening.
Â
The Bullets (4-0) overcame a three-goal second-half deficit for the second game in a row after rallying past then-No. 1 Salisbury 11-10 in double overtime last Saturday.
Â
Risser accepted a pass in front of the goal and turned to see an opening between two defenders. He quickly deposited a shot into the left side of the cage, setting off another Gettysburg celebration on the field.
Â
After scoring the game-winning goal versus Salisbury, junior
Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) came up big in the clutch once again for Gettysburg. He scored the game-tying goal with 10 seconds left in regulation before setting up Risser's game-winner.
Â
The Gettysburg defense was tremendous down the stretch, shutting out the Mustangs over the final 21:23. Senior
Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made four of his season-high 13 saves over the final 10:40 of regulation, including a crucial stop with 34 seconds left that led to Harvey's equalizer. Brady's win was the 44th of his career, moving him into sole possession of fourth on Gettysburg's all-time list.
Â
Sophomore
Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored three goals for the Bullets while Harvey posted two goals and two assists. Risser finished with two goals while senior
Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) went 8-for-15 on face-offs. Sophomore defenseman
Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) picked up a season-high six ground balls.
Â
Sam Ross also had a big game in goal for Stevenson (0-2), finishing with 14 saves, while JT Thelen and Ethan Christensen scored two goals apiece for the Mustangs.
Â
Gettysburg played a very clean game, making just six turnovers and finishing a perfect 22-for22 on clears.
Â
The Bullets won back-to-back overtime games for the second time in three years. They also captured consecutive OT decisions in the 2016 NCAA Division III tournament.
Â
Christensen scored twice in six seconds to hand Stevenson a 6-3 lead with 4:15 left in the third quarter, capping a 4-0 Stevenson run. But that's when the Bullets dug in defensively, starting with a big save from Brady during a Mustang fast break with 3:43 left in the period.
Â
Harvey snapped Stevenson's run when he scored a man-up goal with 54 seconds left in the quarter, finishing off a feed from freshman
Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) at the right doorstep to make it 6-4 heading into the final quarter.
Â
Gettysburg pulled to within 6-5 with 13:18 left on a fast-break goal from Kolen, who accepted a pass from junior defensive midfielder
Jackson Mumford (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) before burying a quick shot in front of the net. Mumford picked up his first collegiate point with the assist.
Â
Defense controlled the game at both ends over the remainder of regulation. In addition to Brady's four late saves, Ross made three stops in the fourth quarter for the Mustangs.
Â
Gettysburg held possession late, but turned it over with 3:23 to go. Stevenson called timeout with 2:51 remaining and looked to run out the clock the rest of the way. The Mustangs were called for a shot-clock warning with 1:53 left, but Brady would make his next-to-last save 19 seconds later. The Bullets then killed off a 30-second penalty before Brady scooped up a bounce shot from Christensen with 34 ticks showing. At the other end of the field, Harvey slashed down the lane before drilling a left-handed shot across his body and into the lower-right corner of the net to send the game to overtime.
Â
Fulgione won the OT face-off, with sophomore long-stick midfielder
Eric Carr (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church) picking up a loose ball near midfield. He passed the ball to Brady, who directed a successful Gettysburg clear that led to Risser's game-winner.
Â
The Bullets struck first when Risser scored a minute and a half into the game. But the Mustangs answered with a goal off the ensuing face-off, then took the lead when they scored a man-up tally with 7:58 showing in the first quarter. Neither side would score over the remainder of the period, and Stevenson led 2-1 heading into the second quarter.
Â
Gettysburg tied it when Kolen buried a man-up, empty-net goal during a failed Mustang clear with 11:05 left in the opening half. He scored again with 6:52 showing, dodging several defenders before depositing a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Bullets up 3-2.
Â
Stevenson came back with the final two goals of the half to take the lead, kicking off its 4-0 spurt. Jacob Tatum flipped in an improbable back-handed shot on a scramble in front of the cage with 4:30 left before Thelen cashed in with 2:09 showing to put the hosts up 4-3 at the half.
Â
The Mustangs held a slight 20-19 shot advantage in the first half. Ross made seven of his saves in the opening 30 minutes, when Brady collected five stops.
Â
Stevenson continued its run in the third quarter with Christenen's two quick goals before the Bullets embarked on their comeback.
Â
Gettysburg also trailed 8-5 with 19 seconds left in the third quarter in their victory over Salisbury.
Â
The Mustangs outshot the Bullets 40-36 while Gettysburg held a 31-30 ground-ball advantage. Â
Â
The Orange and Blue pick up their schedule on Wednesday, when they visit No. 5 York at 7 p.m.
