Blue Jays Compete at NWCA National Duals

Cavallo Posts Three Wins to Pace Blue Jays

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team competed in the 24-team NWCA National Duals on Friday.  Facing strong competition from across the country, the Blue Jays dropped matches to 17th-ranked Olivet (31-13), 21st-ranked Millikin (26-11) and Luther (25-14).

Round One vs. Olivet
The Blue Jays led 10-4 after three bouts, but Olivet rallied to win six of the final seven matches, including two by fall and two by major decision, to pull away.  The Blue Jays got a first-period pin at 133 from senior Ricky Cavallo, a 15-2 major decision win from graduate student Lucas Escobar at 141 and a tight 4-3 win from senior Isaac Morales at 184.

Consolation Bracket vs. Millikin
After the teams split the first two matches, Millkin won three straight bouts from 141 through 157 to grab a 16-4 lead it wouldn't relinquish.  Cavallo scored a 14-0 major decision win over Angel Rios at 133 and senior Dane Morgan made it two wins by major with an 11-1 victory at 165.  Sophomore Henri Behaeghel closed the match with a tough 4-2 victory over Evan Betz at 285 to account for the final score of 26-11.

Final Match vs. Luther
As they did against Olivet, the Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead as Cavallo and Escobar scored back-to-back wins by major decision to give JHU an early 8-3 lead.  Luther responded by winning five straight bouts to turn the 8-3 deficit into a 19-8 lead.  Blue Jay senior Miles Gilliam gave the Blue Jays life with a second-period pin of Hunter Weaver at 197 to make it 19-14 entering the final bout, but Keenan Feldpausch locked up the win for the Norse with a first-period pin at 285.

Perfect Jays
Cavallo was the only Blue Jay to post a 3-0 record on the day.  All three of his wins secured bonus points for the Blue Jays with the one pin and two wins by major.

Notes of Interest
Cavallo improved to 55-20 in his career with the three wins – 37 of his 55 career wins have come by major (12), technical fall (12) or pin (13) • The win against Olivet for Morales was the 70th victory of his career • The two wins on the day for Escobar leave him just three shy of 50 for his career while Morgan is now just seven wins away from 50 • Gilliam's pin against Luther was the 18th of his career.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, January 12 when the Blue Jays travel to Penn Tech to participate in the Mid-Winter Classic.
