SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Ty Abdul-Karim (Washington, D.C./Woodberry Forest [Va.]) posted a tremendous showing the 100-meter dash to lead the Gettysburg College men's track and field team at Shippensburg University's Paul Kaiser Classic on Saturday.
In preliminaries, Abdul-Karim burned the track in 10.93 seconds – a time that makes him the second-fastest performer in school history in the event behind only
Arif Husain '93, the 1993 NCAA Division III 200-meter champion who also competed for his native Pakistan at the 1992 Olympics. Abdul-Karim also became just the third Bullet in school history to break 11 seconds in the 100, joining Husain and
Ken Lovett '90, who ran 10.94 in 1989.
Abdul-Karim had the sixth-fastest preliminary time among 53 competitors, qualifying him for the final. He went to finish seventh with a time of 11.11. He was the top Division III finisher, and he was sixth among collegiate competitors.
Several other Bullets performed well on the track, including freshman
Nicholas Grissinger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Milton Hershey), who took fifth out of 27 athletes in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal record (PR) of 56.51.
Juniors
Alex Petrecca (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) and
Matt Robinson (Taneytown, Md./Pinkerton Academy [N.H.]) each turned in a strong 800-1500 double. Robinson placed ninth among 81 competitors in the 800 with a time of 1:56.85, and he was also 16th out of 45 competitors in the 1500 in 4:15.56. Petrecca came in 10th in the 1500 (4:08.87) and 14th in the 800, running a PR of 1:58.51 in the latter.
Sophomore
Aren Heitmann (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) added a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10.21.17) while junior
Mike Cortese (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township) placed 17th out of 40 competitors in the hammer with a throw of 135-4, placing him third in school history in the event.
Gettysburg returns to the track May 4-6 for the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Ursinus.
