Rangers Hold Off Garnet Fourth Quarter Rally for Third Win of the Season

Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. (March 19, 2014) – The Drew University men's lacrosse team (3-3) defeated non-conference opponent Swarthmore College (2-4), 9-8 this evening at Clothier Field. The Rangers scored a season best three goals in the first quarter to open up a lead they would never lose.

Senior captain Mike Marone (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) led the paced the Ranger offense scoring two goals and adding two assists on the day. Senior Al Faiella (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint) made his made his third start of the season scoring two goals in the victory.

The Rangers scored the first three goals of the game jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J./Notre Dame) scored two of the three Ranger goals in the first quarter, while Marone added the third. Swarthmore scored their first goal of the game just 54 seconds into the start of the second quarter and followed it with another four minutes later.

With 8:03 left in the first half and the Rangers with a one goal lead, Faiella found the back of the net to push Drew out ahead 4-2. Aaron Davis (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) scored his sixth goal of the season after a Garnet goal giving Drew a 5-3 lead with 2:36 left in the second quarter. The Garnet added a later second quarter goal to cut the Drew lead to 5-4 at the end of the first half.

Drew's offense exploded in the third quarter outscoring Swarthmore 4-2. Marone scored his second goal of the game at the 11:56 mark of the third. Senior Craig Wagenblast (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) scored his first goal of the season just 8 seconds later after he picked up a groundball from a Rangers face-off win. Faiella and freshman Mike Lloyd (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) rounded out the scoring for Drew in the third quarter. A three goal lead was just enough to hold off the Garnet attack who scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter. Clinging to a one goal with one minute left to play the Ranger defense forced a turnover to preserve the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) made his fifth start of the season in between the pipes for the Rangers. Mariboe surrendered eight goals and made 12 saves in the victory for the Rangers picking up his third win of the season.

Drew returns to play on Saturday March 22 as they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a Landmark Conference clash with defending champion Susquehanna. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
