No. 1 Gettysburg Races Away from Ursinus

Bullets down Bears 20-3 in Centennial Conference opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – It took a few minutes for the train to get rolling, but once top-ranked Gettysburg College found the back of the net the engine picked up speed quickly and the Bullets steamrolled Ursinus College 20-3 in the Centennial Conference opener Saturday at Patterson Field.

Gettysburg (6-0, 1-0 CC) took nearly nine minutes to get into the scoring column as Ursinus (2-5, 0-1 CC) goalie Kaitlyn France posted four of her game-high 13 saves. Sophomore Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) hit the back of the net at 21:05, kicking off a 6-0 run by the visitors. Barr, freshman Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), and senior Katie Willis (Westminster, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each posted two goals during the run.

Senior Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) dished out a pair of assists during the streak with her second to Willis at 8:28 marking the 100th of her career. Landry became just the fourth Bullet to reach the century mark.

Gettysburg's defense didn't give up much in the opening half against Ursinus, forcing 14 turnovers and seven failed clears by the hosts. Junior goalie Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) did her part in goal with six first-half saves.

Ursinus picked up a pair of goals by Abby Goldstein to slow the tide with five minutes remaining in the first half, but it was a short delay. Goals by first-year Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and McKeever made it 8-2 heading into the second half.

The Bullets ran off eight more goals to start the final period of play. Junior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) opened the half with two goals and an assist to Barr. Barr's fourth tally of the game made it a 10-goal margin (12-2) with 23:38 left.

Landry added two more assists midway through the second half to tie her career high with six and finish one helper shy of tying the program record. Willis found Stokes on a quick backdoor cut to make it 16-2 with 14:24 left.

Landry fired off a long shot for her only goal at 11:13 to begin a game-ending 4-0 run.

Barr set a personal high with four goals and McKeever posted three goals and one assist. Colson, Stokes, Willis, and sophomore Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) all finished with two goals. Willis also dished out two assists.

Colson set a personal high with 11 draw controls as Gettysburg finished with a 16-9 advantage inside the circle. Her total tied the best mark by a Bullet in the last 17 years and was two shy of the program record achieved twice by Megan Murphy '03 in 2001.

Junior Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and sophomore Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) each posted four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) added two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

All three goalies saw time in cage with Pilder playing the entire first half and earning the victory. Sophomore Casey Cole (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made a pair of saves in the first 22:31 of the second period before classmate Abbie Lee (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) notched a pair of stops in the final 7:29.

Gettysburg finished with a 39-15 advantage in shots. The Bullets committed eight less turnovers and finished a perfect 19-for-19 on clears.

A rematch of the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship game looms as the Bullets travel to No. 6 College of New Jersey on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. Gettysburg defeated TCNJ 6-5 to claim the national title last May.
