Bullets Down F&M with Extra Innings Walk-Off

LaCoe hits walk-off sac fly to win game for Gettysburg

Gettysburg, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team got their first Centennial Conference victory of the season Friday afternoon when sophomore Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa. /Hershey) hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th inning to win the game for the Bullets as they defeated Franklin & Marshall 4-3.

Franklin & Marshall (8-9-1, 3-1 CC) jumped on the board quickly taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bullets (7-13, 1-3 CC) would tie the game up in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./ Seton Hall Prep) scored on a fielder's choice when classmate Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J. /Princeton) hit a slow dribbler that forced Diplomat pitcher Matt Androconis to come off the mound and make a tough play. Androconis decided to make a throw to the plate but Giovinco beat the throw and slide safely underneath the catchers tag to tie the game at 1-1.

The Diplomats jumped back on top in the fourth inning when their second baseman J.J. Freeman singled in a run to go up 2-1. Sophomore Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md./ Broadneck) responded for the Bullets in the bottom of the frame when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score freshman Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./ Westfield) to make the game 2-2.

Murphy ripped an RBI single to right field in the following inning to give the Bullets their first lead of the game at 3-2 but F&M would tie the game up in the seventh with an RBI single of their own to make the score 3-3.

After impressive pitching performances by both teams late, the game went into extra innings as neither team was able to plate a run.

Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa. /Bucktail) led off in the bottom of the 12th inning and reached base safely on an infield single. Probst then advanced to second on a balk before Dominick Gasparro would advance Probst to third with a sacrifice bunt to bring Ryan LaCoe up to bat for his late game heroics. The first pitch that LaCoe saw was a hanging breaking ball that he jumped on and drove deep to left field. The left fielder made the catch and Probst cruised home to score the walk-off run for the Orange and Blue.

LaCoe finished the game 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Junior Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn. /Hall) started on the mound for Gettysburg and was solid over four innings giving up two runs on six hits. Freshman Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y. /Garden City) relieved Dobbins in the fifth inning and tossed a strong 3 2/3 innings for the Bullets giving up just one run on three hits.

Junior Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va. /Robinson) entered the game in the eighth inning for the Bullets and was phenomenal as he gave up just two hits over 4 1/3 innings while fanning four to keep the game tied at 3-3 until the Bullets could score the game winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning. He recorded the victory on the afternoon.

Matt Androconis started for F&M and delivered an impressive performance going 7 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out nine.

Offensively, Joe Giovinco finished 3-for-5 with a double while Sean Murphy went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Gettysburg travels to Chestertown, Md. on Sunday to take on Washington College in a Centennial Conference double-header.
