Ursinus Pulls Away from Men’s Basketball

Bears top Bullets 91-60

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Ursinus College canned nearly 59 percent of its shot attempts in the second half to pull away from Gettysburg College for a 91-60 decision in Centennial Conference men's basketball action inside Helfferich Hall Wednesday night.

Ursinus (9-7, 6-3 CC) picked up its fourth win in five games by hitting 39-of-69 (56.5 percent) of its field goals overall and out-scoring Gettysburg (4-12, 3-6 CC) 58-20 in the paint.

Junior Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) paced the Bullets with 16 points by going 7-of-15 from the floor. Sophomore Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds and he posted a personal high four blocked shots. Freshman Jack Rooney (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added eight points and four assists off the bench.

Five Bears reached double-figures with Ryan McTamney netting 18 to go with seven rebounds. Ryan Hughes posted 17 points and nine rebounds and George Gordon scored 13 points. Eric Williams Jr. turned in a dozen tallies and Shane Stark poured in 10.

Ursinus looked to take control early with a 9-0 run that put the score at 16-7 early in the first half. Gettysburg answered with an 11-2 spurt that included back-to-back three-pointers by junior Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Close. The Bullets tied the game 18-18 on a free throw by sophomore Chris Jack (Reckange-Sur-Mess, Luxembourg/The Hun School of Princeton) with 10:35 left in the first half.

McTamney broke the tie with a lay-up to start a 16-2 run by the hosts. Another bucket in the paint by McTamney made it 34-20 with 5:16 remaining in the period. The Bullets banged in four three-pointers in the final minutes to pull to 46-37 at the break.

A three-pointer by senior Matt Palacio (Katanoh, N.Y./John Jay) sliced the deficit down to six (46-40) at the start of the second half. That would be as close as the Bullets would get as the Bears scored 10 of the next 12 points to jump in front 56-42. Ursinus pounded the paint in the final period, scoring 32 of its 45 points between the lanes, and hit 20-of-34 (58.8 percent) of its shot attempts.

Gettysburg finished 24-of-61 (39.3 percent) from the field and 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) from three-point land. Ursinus won the rebounding battle 41-28 and scored 21 points off turnovers.

The Bullets meet Johns Hopkins (10-5, 7-1 CC) in Baltimore this Saturday at 3 p.m.
