Three Muhlenberg sophomore wrestlers earned victories against TCNJ in the wrestling team's first dual match of 2018.
Heavyweight
Scott Schaeffer pinned his opponent to close the night for the Mules, and
Nick Daza and
Dylan Schwartz each won by decision at 157 and 165, respectively. TCNJÂ won the overall match by a score of 28-12.
Schaeffer held his foe scoreless in the first period. From the top position, he then quickly worked to secure his second pin of the season 15 seconds into the period. The win was Schaeffer's 30th of his career and moved him to 4-0 in dual matches this season.
Schwartz opened his bout with two takedowns to go up 4-2 in the first period. He then escaped his opponent twice before earning another takedown, which his opponent escaped to make it 7-6. Starting the third period from the down position with a 1:12 riding time advantage, Schwartz escaped in four seconds and held check the rest of the way for a 9-6 victory, his 23rd of the season.
DazaÂ
(pictured above) trailed to start his match before making his comeback in the second period with two near falls to go up 6-2. His opponent pulled a reversal to start the third period, but Daza was able to escape and with riding time solidified a 9-4 win. The win is the first for Daza in a dual match this season and the 20th of his career.
Sophomore
Michael Dougan fought to a close 8-4 decision at 149, earning points on reversals in the second and third periods. Junior
Gennaro Cerminara also battled to a tight decision at 197.
