Softball Earns Split To Open 2018 Season

DOVER, Del.—Swarthmore College Softball split the first doubleheader of the 2018 season and the first of new head coach Melissa Finley's career with the Garnet.

Swarthmore fell 4-3 in the opener to Wesley College, but then doubled up the Wolverines 8-4 in game two.

Game One: Swarthmore 3, Wesley 4
RBIs from Kennedy Kings and Emilie Morse in the third inning put Swarthmore ahead 3-2. However, Wesley picked up a run in the fourth to even the score and scored the game-winning run, unearned, in the bottom of the sixth.

The Garnet recorded four hits with one each from Mika Maenaga, Kennedy Kings, Emilie Morse, and Victoria Overbeck.

McKenzie Ward struck out two batters in the loss and only allowed two earned runs.

Game Two: Swarthmore 8, Wesley 4
Freshman Maddie Bowe got the win in her first collegiate start, striking out six Wesley batters in six innings and scattering seven hits. Bowe allowed seven hits and three runs, one earned.

Gabriella Natoli went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Kings batted 2-for-4 in the nightcap. Emilie Morse went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Mika Maenaga batted in a run as well.

The Garnet scored two runs in the second and picked up another run on an RBI double from Maenaga in the third. Swarthmore led 4-3 going into the top of the sixth and then picked up a run on a wild pitch. The Garnet added two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
