#7 Swarthmore Edges Out NJCU

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 7-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball beat New Jersey City University 4-3 on Wednesday. The Garnet have won eight of their last nine games and have a 9-3 record this season.

The Knights struck first by scoring on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. However, the Garnet tied the game in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Michael Sepe drove in senior Charles Levitt on a fielder's choice groundball. Levitt got to third after walking and advancing on a double by junior Cole Beeker.

Swarthmore took its lead in the second inning by scoring two runs on singles by Levitt and sophomore Sam Jacobson.

NJCU scored its second run in the top of the fourth, but Swarthmore responded again as Jacobson recorded his second RBI single.

The Knights threatened a handful of times throughout the remainder of the game but only plated one more runner in the seventh.

Senior starting pitcher Charles Groppe escaped a few jams to allow just two runs over four innings of work. The Garnet would go on to use four relievers. Freshman Zach Camp pitched three innings of one-run baseball. Freshman Oliver Hicks, senior Zach Gonzalez, and sophomore Owen Webb closed the door by combining for two scoreless innings. Webb picked up his second save of the season.

Junior Holden Bridge, named the National Hitter of the Week on Wednesday, had a 10-game hit streak snapped yesterday. Nonetheless, Bridge went 2-for-3 with a walk against NJCU, bringing his average to .549 on the season. He's only struck out one time in just under 60 plate appearances.

Swarthmore has its third straight home game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Drew University.
