The Muhlenberg men's basketball team fell behind on a late first-half run and could not catch up, falling to Gettysburg 78-69 on Senior Day.
The loss, combined with wins by Franklin & Marshall, Washington and Swarthmore, eliminated the Mules from the Centennial Conference playoffs and ended their season.
Freshman
Dan Gaines led Muhlenberg with 23 points, with junior
Matt Gnias (15) and sophomore
Michael Morreale (10) both scoring in double figures as well.
Gettysburg (6-19, 5-13) roared out to a 13-2 lead, but the Mules (12-13, 9-9) rallied behind a pair of putbacks by freshman Nate Henty Brown and a thunderous dunk by senior
Erik Werheim to take a 16-15 lead. A three by Morreale made in 19-15 with 8:17 to go in the half and gave Muhlenberg its biggest lead.
The Bullets scored the final five points of the half to open up a 37-32 lead at the break and maintained their edge throughout the second half.
Down eight going into the final minute, the Mules sliced the lead in half on a four-point play by Gaines with 44.2 ticks left, but Gettysburg closed out the game at the line.
Gaines' 23 points game him 369 for the year, the third-most by a Mule freshman since 2000. In addition to pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds, Henty Brown became the first Muhlenberg freshman to make 50 three-pointers in a season and the first Mule player ever to lead the team in threes and rebounding in the same season.
Muhlenberg finished the year with 236 threes, breaking the record of 231 it set last season.
Werheim and fellow senior
Brendan Hughes were honored prior to the game.
